Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can you register for summer school electives before submitting a program plan?
A. Technically, yes, but you really want to get your program plan approved first so that you can be sure your electives will count toward your degree. If you prefer to get approval of elective courses prior to forming a committee or filing the program plan, please submit an Electives/Transfer Credits Approval Form (Word file).
Q. How do you get your program plan approved?
A.If you have selected a committee (chair and member), talk over your goals and possible courses with your committee chair and submit your plan to him/her.
Q. How to select a committee?
A.Any of the faculty who have taught in your cohort are able to be on your committee. Other faculty at UMD can also serve on your committee.
Q. How about the course offerings that say, "not for Graduate Credit," do they count as electives in the M.Ed.?
A.Yes. "Graduate Credit" refers to graduate courses that are connected to the Twin Cities campus. The M.Ed. is a collegiate degree based out of UMD. All courses in UMD's catalogs with designators of 5000 or above will qualify (if they're on your approved program plan).
