Advising Committee
October 7, 2004
Present: Joie Acheson, Tom Beery, Trudie Hughes, Cindy Spillers, Kay Wohlhuter, Maribeth Overland
The committee reviewed the results of the CEHSP Bi-Annual Advising Survey. The data indicated that academic advising within CEHSP is maintaining or improving in all areas. The data indicated a reduction in student satisfaction with advisors keeping regular adequate office hours. The committee agreed that consistent communication with students via email/signage regarding scheduling process of appointments is necessary to reduce student frustration. Additional discussion followed as to what would be considered "adequate" hours short of 24-7.
Action Requested: Committee members meet with their department heads to review process for addressing program/dept. concerns voiced through comments.
A discussion of the current millennial generation traits/qualities followed. It was determined that advisors could expect an increase in student demand for advising services upon demand as well as parent involvement.
Action Requested: None of committee at this time. (Question posed by Maribeth in minutes – would departments be interested in an informational session/handout on the millennial generation and how it affects advising/teaching?)
The committee members discussed the creation of developing a learning outcome based assessment tool for future survey/information gathering pertaining to academic advising within CEHSP.
Action Requested: Committee members were asked to solicit input from their colleagues regarding specific learning outcomes that would be of interest/value to this process. The committee will submit their findings via email to Maribeth prior to the next meeting. It was agreed that the committee members should have adequate time to gather feedback prior to meeting. The scheduled October & November meetings were cancelled.
Next Meeting: Thursday, December 2nd, 9:30 – 11:00 a.m., KPLZ 248
