ADVISING COMMITTEE MEETING
October 31, 2001
Present: Bruce Munson, Sara Bohlgren, Maribeth Overland, Jackie Millslagle, Cindy Spillers, John Keener.
Consensus that two meetings per semester is sufficient. The next meeting will be at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 5. Room to be announced. Jackie gave updates on:
- Advising loads. Making progress toward the ideal of 30 currently enrolled undergraduates, with 35 the maximum. Faculty in Education and Psychology are at the maximum. Faculty in HPER are still overloaded, but staffing plans and some load re-assignment should solve those problems by next year. Para-professionals in the Advising Center are handling approximately 550 pre-education and incoming psychology majors.
- Advising Center. Staffed by three second-year counseling graduate students. Evaluations will be conducted during this upcoming registration queue to provide rationale for continued funding.
- In-service training. Sessions on APAS/advising update and Portfolio training were delivered at the department level throughout October and early November. Department Heads and new faculty will be reminded of new advisor training scheduled for January. Bruce Munson indicated that more training on APAS would be beneficial. Maribeth Overland suggested that we start to train students on how to use this tool, and she will develop some workshops for spring semester. Committee members will recruit student representatives for this committee. Names will be forwarded to Jackie for official appointment. A copy of the current advising policy was distributed. Committee members will review and amendments/changes can be proposed at the next meeting.
- Last spring, this committee recommended that an advising survey be conducted in the spring semester every two years. The survey used in spring 2000 was circulated and some suggestions made. A next draft will be prepared for review in December. This survey will be conducted electronically. Individual advisors are NOT identified; results will be summarized by department/major.
