Chancellor's Diversity Initiative

Date: August 30, 2007

To: Faculty/Departments

From: Vince Magnuson, Vice Chancellor for Academic Administration

Re: Diversity Initiative

You are invited to submit a proposal to increase faculty diversity for 2007-2008. Chancellor Martin has set aside $50,000 to fund either
individual or departmental proposals. Proposals may be submitted in any of these three areas: Target of Opportunity Program (TOP), faculty in
residence, or utilization of technology to increase diversity.

If a department hires a minority or under-represented faculty member, the college can request TOP funds in an amount up to 50 percent of the starting salary. The collegiate dean may use these TOP funds to promote diversity or to support the new hire or collegiate priorities in general. The college keeps these funds as long as the diversity hire remains in the college.

The faculty in residence program is specifically intended to bring a minority or under-represented faculty member to campus for a period of one
week, one month, or one semester. While on campus it is expected that the faculty-in-residence would work in regularly scheduled classrooms or labs, give a public lecture, exhibition, etc., and be available to meet with interested faculty and students. Of particular interest is the promotion of the active participation of undergraduates in scholarship in programs like UROP.

Grant requests to fund the use of technology to enhance diversity in our faculty and to provide opportunities for students are also solicited. For
example, the use of ITV or the Internet to connect a class at UMD with a group of students in an institution with a decidedly minority population
would be an appropriate way to use technology to increase diversity.

Please submit your proposal, using the attached format, to your Principal Administrator, through your department head, for review and recommendation
to the VCAA office.
