Graduate Program Council

October 27, 2009

Present: Dennis Falk, Kim Riordan, Bruce Munson (ex officio)
Guest: Joyce Strand

Joyce Strand was invited as a guest to provide her insights and describe her role on the UMD Graduate Council Executive Committee. Unfortunately many of the committee members had meeting conflicts develop, so those present had an informal discussion.

Joyce noted that she was appointed to her role on the Executive Committee by Tim Holst. There may have been some consideration of her appointment since she is DGS for the Ed.D. program. Dennis noted that elections had been discussed previously as the procedure to select Executive Committee members. Joyce stressed that the graduate committees were still in transition and the roles were not clearly defined yet. It was seen as likely that the Executive Committee would probably address BROAD policy issues and general program oversight. As of 10/27/09 there had been only one meeting of the Executive Committee. The consensus at that meeting was that the UMD Graduate Committee would be the decision-making body for graduate policies.

Those present requested that Joyce remain in close communication with the CEHSP Graduate Program Council and agreed that the GPC would also keep Joyce informed about its discussions. There was some discussion whether Joyce should become the Education representative to the committee, but that is a departmental decision.
