If running isn't your thing, participate in Grandma's Marathon by becoming a volunteer! We are looking for individuals who are interested in volunteering at the UMD water station.
Volunteering during Grandma's Marathon is a great opportunity for groups and individuals who want to show their UMD community spirit! Make this a department or club event and bring your family and friends!
Every volunteer will receive an official Grandma's Marathon T-shirt, refreshment tickets, and an invitation to the special Grandma's Marathon Volunteer Appreciation Party on Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Grandma's Marathon is Saturday, June 20. We're looking for approximately 50 volunteers. Our location will determine the times of day we'll need volunteers.

Students at Minnehaha Elementary School in Two Harbors will be planting trees and shrubs to create a new outdoor classroom on their school grounds as part of Tree Trust’s Learning with Trees program.
They are looking for 5-10 college student volunteers to help at this event. Volunteers will be responsible for guiding groups of students through the planting process—from digging the hole, to planting the tree at the appropriate depth, to mulching, to watering—and ensuring that the trees are all planted correctly. We will provide training for the volunteers the morning of the event.
This volunteer opportunity is ideal for students interested in education, kids, trees, and/or the environment.

-Lake Superior Zoo
*Lake Superior Zoo has a stock pile of VHS tapes that need to be organized and converted to DVD to provide better storage and accessibility to the material. We are looking for a volunteer who is interested in working on this project and has access to the equipment to do VHS to DVD conversion. Many different opportunities to help out: annual Clean and Green spring cleanup effort, Beach sweeps to clear trash from the Park Point beach areas, Adopt-a-Park maintenance program, National Trails Day, the installation of playground equipment at Chester Bowl and Park Point, Winterizing the Rose Garden each fall, Flooding the ice skating rinks, removing buckthorn at the Hartley nature area and along the Western Waterfront Trail, repairing, maintaining and/or improving the Chester, Congdon, Kingsbury Creek, Lincoln Park, Hartley and Mission Park hiking trails, maintaining and realigning the Hartley Bike Trail, maintaining gardens in neighborhood parks, St. Scholastica Community Day, Duluth Area Catholic Schools Service Day, special events through the Sentence to Serve Program, senior programs.

Trail Maintenance Work Projects
*North Shore Maintenance Work Project Our biggest task for maintenance on the North Shore for May and July will be to clear the SHT from the devestating ice storm that hit the trail in March. Volunteers can sign up to help on the following dates. From the meeting point, we will be creating crews of 2-3 people to go out with certified SHT chainsawyers to buck up trees and clear the trail.
You must pre-register in advance by the Thursday before each work date so we know how many people to expect. Email the SHTA Office at volunteer@shta.org or call at 218-834-2700 to sign up.
Participants should dress for work: wear sturdy boots and long sleeve pants and shirts. Bring hard hats, safety glasses, gloves and ear protection if you have them -- if not they will be provided. Bring a lunch and beverages. The day’s work should be done by 3:00-4:00.
Saturday, May 2nd – Two Locations:
1) Saturday, May 2nd, 8:30 a.m.: Meet at the main building of the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in Finland, Minnesota. (This meeting place is in conjunction with our Annual Meeting, which is being held at Wolf Ridge during this weekend.) Directions: At Hwy 61 milepost 60.2 take Hwy 1 five miles to Finland. Turn right on Co Rd 6 and go about three miles to Cranberry Rd (watch for Wolf Ridge sign). Turn right and go 2.5 to Wolf Ridge campus. Follow one-way drive to parking lot, park, and walk up to building.

2) Saturday, May 2nd, 9:00 a.m.: A second group of trail clearers will meet at the Britton Peak trailhead parking lot and will concentrate on clearing the sections from Temperance River State Park to Lutsen. Directions: At Hwy 61 milepost 82.8 turn left on Cook Co Rd 2 (Sawbill Trail out of Tofte) and go 2.7 miles to trailhead parking lot on right.
Sunday, May 3rd -- Two Locations
1) Sunday, May 3rd, 8:30 a.m.: Meet at the main building at Wolf Ridge. Use the above directions.
2) Sunday, May 3rd, 9:00 a.m.: Meet at the Britton Peak trailhead parking lot. Use the above directions.
Saturday, June 6 and/or Sunday June 7, National Trails Day:
SHTA will be hosting free camping Friday the 5th, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th at Tettegouche State Park and providing a free picnic supper on Saturday for all volunteers. Camping equipment and all other meals are your responsibility. You need a state park sticker for your vehicle to be in the state park for camping. Meet each morning at 9:00 at Tettegouche Wayside. Directions: At Hwy 61 milepost 58.5, turn right and drive into the wayside. You don’t need a state park sticker for the wayside.
*Duluth Maintenance Work Projects Larry Sampson will be continuing as our Duluth Trail Maintenance Supervisor in 2009. Larry has several projects planned for next year such as putting in small re-routes, adding steps to steep trail sections, and adding water bars to parts of the trail for erosion control. Larry has a small group of dedicated volunteers who help him out with projects, but he would like to increase his numbers of volunteers. If you would like to be on Larry’s volunteer email list, please email him at LBSampson@msn.com. Larry will add you to his list and then send out announcements of when he plans to do projects. You can then sign up with him for projects to help out with.
