Information for Students

Interested in volunteering?

Any students who are interested in volunteering in the community should consider one of the following:

  • Attending the Office of Civic Engagement's volunteer fair! The volunteer fairs for 2008-2009 will be on September 17, 2008 and February 4, 2009 from 9-3 in the Kirby Ballroom.
  • Signing up to have an appointment with one of the Office of Civic Engagement's volunteer coordinators. You can do so either by coming to our office in Bohannon 209 from 9am-4pm on weekdays, or by calling (218) 726-6630.

For any students enrolled in a class for which volunteer hours are part of a mandatory practicum, the class instructor may have special instructions to follow.

Interested in Tutoring? Click Here Five Points

Student volunteers are expected to:

  • Be prompt, willing, respectful and positive at the placement site.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork as directed by the placement site and OCE.
  • Fulfill all agreed upon duties and responsibilities at the community agency.
  • Be open to learning about cultures and lifestyles different from their own.
  • Speak with the supervisor and/or instructor if uncomfortable or uncertain about what to do.
  • Respect the confidentiality of the individuals they work with at the organization.
  • Participate in the evaluation process.

If volunteering for a class, students are also expected to:

  • Complete any paperwork as directed by the class instructor
  • Provide feedback about the service experience and its relevance to the course material.
  • Actively participate in course discussions.
  • Provide copies of reflection papers or final projects to the community organization supervisor as requested.
