Advising at UMD
Both students and advisors have advising responsibilities. While students ultimately make their own decisions concerning their academic plans and careers, advisors assist them with the decision-making process and the exploration of options. By providing support, direction, and guidance, advisors at UMD help students reach their educational goals, experience academic success, and graduate in a timely manner.
- If you’re a new student, consider an introductory meeting with your advisor early in the semester, before you meet to discuss classes for next semester.
- Meet with your advisor at least once each semester
- Schedule, prepare for, and keep your advising appointments
- Check your UMD email daily
- Learn to read your APAS report
- Know the basic requirements of the Liberal Education Program
- Know the basic requirements of your degree program
- Prepare a plan for degree completion using Graduation Planner
- Make and be responsible for your own decisions
How to prepare for your advising appointment
- If you want to talk about classes for next semester, plan courses using Graduation Planner and bring your laptop to the meeting.
- Use the online Class Schedule to make sure your proposed classes are being offered and that you meet the course prerequisites.
- Be ready to explain how your proposed classes fit into your degree requirements or other goals.
- Make a list of questions for your advisor.
Behaviors of Successful Students:
- Go to class every day. Get to know your professors.
- Time-on-task for academic work (4 – 5 hours/day).
- Recognize when you need help. Asking for help is a sign of maturity -- seek out help and then follow through!
- Take personal responsibility for your actions and decisions.
