College Honors

At UMD, a maximum of 15 percent of the graduating class can graduate with college honors. In CEHSP, the top three percent of the graduating class is designated summa cum laude, the next 5 percent magna cum laude, and the next seven percent cum laude. The minimum GPAs necessary to achieve these honors are established on the basis of the record of the previous year's graduating class.  You can find the University Policy online at:

Latin honors are noted in the commencement bulletin and are listed on the student's transcript. Latin honors recipients are awarded an honors medallion, which is to be worn during the commencement ceremony.

Fall 2014, Spring 2015 and Summer 2015 graduates, the minimum GPA for honors is as follows:

Summa Cum Laude:  top 3% of graduating class

Magna Cum Laude:  top 5% of graduating class

Cum Laude:  top 7% of graduating class
