Effective Educational Videos: SotL Journal Club pilot opportunity via WebEx from CEI

UMD faculty and staff have the opportunity to participate in an experiment to expand the Pedagogical Innovations Journal Club (offered by UMTC-CEI) to the other system campuses via WebEx this coming Monday, February 6th, from 11:30-12:30. Join from the comfort of your own office or wherever else you choose to login from.

The Early February Pedagogical Innovations Journal Club article is "Effective Educational Videos: Principles and Guidelines for Maximizing Student Learning from Video Content" published in 2016 in the CBE Life Sciences Education. In this article the authors review recent pedagogical research on good practice for creating instructional videos. They identify three areas to address in order to enhance the effectiveness of videos. These areas are; managing the cognitive load of the video, maximizing student engagement with the video, and promoting active learning from the video. We will discuss the implications of these findings for your teaching. You do not have to read the article to benefit from attending the journal club.
