About Chancellor Black

Dr. Lendley C. (Lynn) Black began his tenure as Chancellor of UMD on August 1, 2010. Dr. Black came to UMD from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia, where he served as Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2002 until he was promoted in 2006 to Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

He earned his B.A. degree in English from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1974, his M.A. in theatre from the University of Connecticut, and his Ph.D. in theatre from the University of Kansas in 1984. Chancellor Black's research interests are in Russian theatre and drama, and his dissertation was titled: A Portrait of Misha: The Life and Artistic Accomplishments of Mikhail Alexandrovich Chekhov.

Before his appointment as Vice President at Kennesaw State University, Dr. Black held several senior administrative positions at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. He served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences from 1993-2002, as Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Studies from 1991-1993, as Director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies from 1989 to 1992, and as Director of the Student Advising Center from 1988 to 1992. He joined the faculty at Emporia State in 1982 as an instructor, was an Assistant Professor from 1985-88, was tenured in 1987 and was an Associate Professor from 1988 to 1993 and was promoted to Professor in 1993.

This fall, Chancellor Black will join the Board of Directors for the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce.

Chancellor Black and his wife, Connie, have three adult children - Liz, Nick and Chris - and three grandchildren: Sarah, Max and Henry.
