The general nature and purpose of these grants are explained in the call for proposals below.

Office of the Chancellor

To: UMD Faculty and Staff

From: Denny Falk, Faculty Fellow for Strategic Planning

Subject: Chancellor’s Cabinet Strategic Initiative Grants

Proposals will be accepted for Strategic Initiative funding for 2012. Chancellor Black and
the Cabinet have set aside one-time funding for individual, unit, or departmental small
grants of $500-$3,000. Proposals should focus on implementing specific action steps that
will move UMD toward achieving campus strategic goals, and project activities should be
completed by December 31, 2012. Funds could be used for a variety of purposes, including
student assistants and professional development activities, and proposals that integrate
curricular and co-curricular activities are encouraged.

The current round of funding will be directed to Goal 1 (undergraduate education), Goals 5
(community partnerships), and Goal 6 (sustainability); other support will be provided for
the other three campus goals. Proposals in the following areas are invited:
1. Course redesign projects to include active learning strategies, best practices and
alternate modes of delivery (Goal 1, Action step 5). See the following web site for
models of course redesign: http://www.thencat.org/PlanRes/R2R_ModCrsRed.htm
2. Embed community-based learning into the curriculum and co-curriculum (Goal 5,
Action step 7) or development of other mutually beneficial relationships with the
community more broadly (Goal 5).
3. Infuse the concept and application of sustainability into our curriculum and co-
curriculum, our research activities, and our use of facilities (Goal 6, Action step 9).

The Strategic Initiative funds will be awarded based on proposals (see proposal
format
). Criteria to be considered in awarding grants 1) clarity of the proposal, 2) potential
for the project to move UMD toward achieving one or more of the six campus goals, 3)
support for the project, and 4) clarity and efficiency of plan for assessment. A one-page
final report will be due after the completion of the project. This final report should include
name, project title and description, project dates, and the assessment of the project
outcomes.

Please refer to the following timeline for submission of proposals. Due to:
• Department head (faculty)/Supervisor (staff) February 14, 2012
• Principal Administrator (faculty)/Vice Chancellor (staff) February 17, 2012
• Chancellor’s Office February 22, 2012
