Mission Statement

A third element of the UMD Strategic Planning process involved revising the mission statement that describes the fundamental purpose of the UMD campus.

Goal: An updated mission statement of a sentence or brief paragraph that captures the essence of the current fundamental purpose of the UMD campus.

Process (target completion date):

• A Mission Statement Subcommittee of the Steering Committee began with the current UMD mission statement and prepared an updated draft. (1/14/11)
• The Executive Team and Steering Committee reviewed and revised the draft. (1/28/11)
• Stakeholders were asked to review the draft mission statement and to suggest changes, online and at campus forums. (2/8/11, 3/29)
• The Steering Committee and Chancellor Black finalized the updated mission statement. (4/11/11)
• The Steering Committee recommended that the mission statement be endorsed by the Campus Assembly as part of the integrated strategic plan. (4/11/11)
• The Campus Assembly endorsed (4/12/11) and Chancellor Black approved (5/3/11) the revised mission statement as part of the overall strategic plan.

Approved mission statement:

The University of Minnesota Duluth integrates liberal education, research, creative activity, and public engagement and prepares students to thrive as lifelong learners and globally engaged citizens.
