Core Values

A second element of the UMD Strategic Planning process involved identifying a set of core values that will guide the campus as it continues its mission and works toward achieving the campus goals and vision.

Goal: A list of 5-7 core values (described in short phrases) that will guide campus activities

Process (completion dates):

• A Core Values Subcommittee of the Steering Committee generated a list of possible core values. (1/14/11)
• The Steering Committee prioritized the values and created a draft list of core values. (1/28/11)
• Stakeholders reviewed the draft list of values and suggest changes, online and at campus forums. (2/8/11, 3/29/11)
• The Steering Committee and Chancellor Black finalized the statement on core values. (4/1/11)
• The Steering Committee recommended that the core values be endorsed by the Campus Assembly as part of the integrated strategic plan (4/11/11).
• The Campus Assembly endorsed (4/12/11) and Chancellor Black approved (5/3/11) the core values as part of the overall strategic plan.

Approved Core Values Statement:

To promote student success and to enrich the educational experience, students, staff and faculty at UMD strive to learn, work, and live in accord with the following core values:

Learning. We educate students through an integrative learning-centered environment that fosters a lifelong pursuit of wisdom.

Discovery. We discover, create, and share knowledge.

Engagement. We actively collaborate with each other and the larger community to identify and achieve common goals.

Inclusiveness. We respect and embrace the diversity of individuals, perspectives, and ideas and strive for social justice.

Sustainability. We balance current environmental, economic, and social needs with those of future generations.

Integrity. We adhere to the highest ethical standards and take responsibility for our ideas and actions.

Excellence. We achieve excellence through creativity, continuous improvement, and innovation.
