Advisors
& Advisement
Welcome to the chemical
engineering program at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).
You are interested in a career as a chemical engineer and as the
first step you have selected chemical engineering as your field
of study at UMD. Your goal will be to receive a degree of bachelors of science in chemical engineering and we will make every effort for
you to achieve this goal. Please stop by the department office
in 176 Engineering Building or contact us (phone: 218-726-7126
or email: che@d.umn.edu) if you need further information.
Advisement
is an integral part of the chemical engineering
student experience. The Department of Chemical
Engineering is committed to providing quality
advise to our students. Each student is assigned a
chemical engineering faculty member that meets with
them at least once each term before registering for
classes the following term. The faculty are
available to answer questions relating to the
chemical engineering program at UMD, course
registration, careers, and
life-long-learning.
Students
are encouraged to meet with their advisor often to
ensure that they are on track as they progress
through the requiried courses for graduation with a
degree in chemical engineering. Advisors also have
up-to-date information on class schedules,
internships, COOP, and research opportunities
available through the department. Your advisor is a
great source of information for career guidance
before graduation, and can answer questions on
topics ranging from career opportunities to
graduate school.
Faculty advisors
post their office hours and meeting sign-up sheets each semester
before registration. Stop by and sign-up, or contact your advisor
to schedule an appointment. If you are not sure who your advisor
is, check with the Department of Chemical Engineering or College
of Science and Engineering office of Student Affairsin 140 Engineering
Building.
Chemical Engineering Technology Recommendations:
Chemical
engineering students need a "scientific/engineering" calculator.
Chemical Engineering students are required to use computers on campus for communicating with the department, accessing information, solving engineering problems, and documenting their course work. Specialized engineering software that is cost prohibitive for personal use is maintained for student use in our department labs, or in campus computer labs for a fee.
Personal computers are recommended, but not required. Personal computers should be capable of running the latest version of MS Office (Excel, Word, & PowerPoint). We recommend that students wait until they are on campus before purchasing software for educational use. Most educational-use software is available to students at a discounted educational rate through UMD Stores.
Please consult our campus computer store or Office of Information Technology for assistance regarding the selection of computers and compatibility with campus systems.
