Laboratory Safety

The UMD Laboratory Safety Plan (LSP) describes policies, procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment and work practices that are capable of protecting employees from the health hazards (OSHA- and MERTKA-regulated substances) in laboratories. This plan is intended to meet the requirements of the federal Laboratory Safety Standard, formally known as "Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories". The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is committed to the highest UMD safety standards in order to create a safe working/learning environment for its students, staff and faculty. These safety procedures are also designed to minimize the impact of our activities on the environment and surrounding community, in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. For additional information, please visit the Research Safety Plan as described by the UMD Environmental Health and Safety Office.
