Undergraduate Analytical Chemistry Award

Selection Criteria:

Outstanding junior; demonstrated interest and ability in analytical chemistry


Application/selection process:

Analytical chemistry instructors select top students at the end of Spring Semester.


Award winners receive:

Subscription to Analytical Chemistry ; Certificate




James H. Maguire Award

Dr. James H. Maguire is a UMD alumnus, having received a B.S. in chemistry in 1970, and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina . He taught at the University of North Carolina until his death in 1989.

Selection Criteria:

Outstanding chemistry or biochemistry and molecular biology major


Application/selection process:

Students apply during the spring of their sophomore or junior years for up to two years of scholarship support.

Award winners receive:

Scholarship; Certificate




Hypercube Scholar Award

Selection Criteria:

Outstanding chemistry or biochemistry and molecular biology major; planning to attend graduate school; junior year


Application/selection process:

Faculty select top students at the end of Spring Semester.


Award winners receive:

HyperChem Software; Plaque




Robert Bayer Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Raymond Bayer established the Robert W. Bayer Memorial Scholarship in 1965 in honor of his twin brother, Robert, who died of a brain tumor. The Bayer brothers were graduates of the UMD Chemistry Department who both went on to become dentists.

Selection Criteria:

Chemistry or biochemistry and molecular biology major; junior or senior in the fall when the award starts; planning on graduate school; financial need


Application/selection process:

Faculty select awardees at the end of Spring Semester.

Monetary Award




Kenneth E. Differt Scholarship

Selection Criteria:

High scholastic merit and potential; financial need


Application/selection process:

Faculty select awardees when at end of Spring Semester


Award winners receive:

Certificate; Monetary Award (Awarded in spring for following academic year)




Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Award

Selection Criteria:

Outstanding undergraduate teaching assistant; taught at least two semesters as an undergraduate


Application/selection process:

Faculty select awardees at the end of Spring Semester.
