UMD Department of Civil Engineering

Student Organizations

There are many opportunities for students to join organizations and clubs. The civil department has a couple of student based organizations the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

ASCE

ASCE is the professional civil engineering society, with a student chapter open to students interested in the organization and all students enrolled in civil engineering. This organization was established to expand the college experience for students in civil engineering and aid in establishing the professional contacts that are so valuable to the practicing engineers. Membership is free. To join ASCE visit the ASCE website.ASCE participated in the cardboard canoe race

The Duluth Student Chapter is new but expanding. The club has regular meetings during the semesters, schedules tours, and participates in competitions. This year the club is looking to participate in more competitions. With the help of new members and existing members this can be achieved. For more information about the Duluth Student Chapter contact Chris Bruhn, the club president at bruhn016@d.umn.edu.

SWE

SWE has become one of the most well known and respected organizations for women in any STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field. SWE is a nonprofit educational service organization, which strives to establish engineering as a highly desirable career for women. For more about SWE or membership please visit the SWE website.

Currently there are about 10 members who represent a variety of engineering fields and twice a month they meet. SWE is currently volunteering at the middle school in town. Last spring semester they helped Woodland Middle School with the Lego Robotics program. This year they have began building a Rube Goldberg, a machine that takes the longest time to do the simplest task.
