Welcome Graduate Students
Making the decision to continue one’s education at the graduate level is a significant moment in one’s life. I am pleased that you have decided to enter one of the College of Liberal Arts outstanding graduate programs. CLA offers three Masters degrees, each one providing a rich intellectual experience that will enhance your career credentials and deepen your talents. Joining the esprit d’ corps of dedicated graduate students and faculty, entering into an intellectual tradition in a more focused, demanding way, is life-changing. By the time you receive your graduate diploma, you will have added enormously to your store of knowledge, gained new friends and colleagues, and participated in the professional work of your discipline.
The Masters programs in Advocacy and Political Leadership (MAPL), Criminology (MA), and English (MA), as well as the Graduate Minor in Linguistics, offer significant paths to professional and personal development. Whatever your program, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a major professor or advisor, to involve yourself in scholarly endeavors, and to confront real-world, practical issues. At the same time, your understanding of the major discussions and theories of your discipline will grow exponentially, your acquaintance with the movers and shakers of your academic world will deepen, and your role as a professional who contributes knowledge to the field will clarify. Graduate school is, at once, daunting, exhilarating, and illuminating. The challenge of stretching yourself intellectually, of honing your analytical and creative abilities, will forever change you in the best possible way.
Congratulations on making this step in your career. I wish you all the best!
