Jedediah Smith 1799-1831

Jedediah Smith started his voyage from St. Louis at the age of 22, which is the right most black star on the map below. He then traveled to Salt Lake, which is the left star on the map below. Smith and his men traveled south from Salk Lake looking for furs, but were in arid plains and desert, and nearly died of starvation and dehydration. Luckily for them, they were saved by indians. From there, the men reached San Diego in 1826, where Smith was thought of as a spy. They escaped north to Oregon. In 1830, Smith decided to end his "mountain man" days, but had one more voyage to the southwest to make. In 1831, on that last voyage, he was looking for water on the Santa Fe Trail, and was killed by Comanche warriors. To see another site on Jedediah Smith, click
