Backpacking in Europe

Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy.

Trevi Fountain is built into the side of a building in Rome.
Legend has it that the more money you throw in the fountain, the faster you'll return to Rome.
[I would recommend Three Coins in the Fountain]

Make the most of a European backpacking trip...

About this time of year you begin to read stories and see advertisements on touring and backpacking in Europe. Last year, for example, a Duluth News Tribune article profiled how three women and four men between the ages of nineteen and twenty-one backpacked in Europe: "For two weeks, we would travel and learn and explore Europe.... We were there to 'do Europe,' and 'do' it we did. Five cities in two weeks.... If you want to go next summer, now is the time to start planning." They then provide a "taste of our trip to help like-minded travelers plan," highlighting ROME--DAYS 1-3, VENICE--DAYS 4-6, PARIS--DAYS 7-9, BARCELONA--DAYS 10-11, and MADRID--DAYS 12-14.

Questions:
1. If you were a "like-minded traveler" and planned to go on your dream two-week backpacking trip to Europe this summer, where would you go and what specifically would you see?
2. Why did you pick the places to go?
3. Why did you pick specific things to see?

Italian Trash

Map of Italy.

Last year the U.S.A. government warned its citizens against traveling to Naples, Italy. They said, straightforwardly, "Don't go," because of the health hazard posed by the mountains of garbage piling up in the streets. Garbage piling up has been a crisis in the Campania region since 1994--almost 15 YEARS! And, some say, the mafia is involved. This week...

Questions:

1.

If the Italian government can't solve the Naples garbage problem in almost 15 years, how do you suppose the EU lawsuit will help, when it took the EU 30 years to answer the question "What is chocolate?"?

Why?

2.

Perhaps more importantly, do you think the trash disposal problems in Italy are the "canary in the mine" for nations in Europe in general?

Why or why not.
