Jane YolenThe theme of this year's Baeumler Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration is Literature about the Holocaust for Children.  Our featured presenter is renowned children's book author, Jane Yolen.  Yolen has written well over 300 books in her long career, and may be known by some for her very popular Dinosaur series (How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten?; How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?, etc.).  Her most well-known Holocaust-themed book is The Devil's Arithmetic, but she has written a number of other books with Holocaust themes, including Briar Rose--a rewriting of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale set during the second world war.

In addition to Yolen's presentation, we will also be hosting a number of workshops of particular interest for teachers and others who introduce and use literature of the Holocaust with children and young adults.  The first workshop on "Teaching the Holocaust" to students in grades 5-12 will be led by Mary Anderson Petroske, a principal in the Superior Public Schools.   A second workshop on "Using Literature to Teach the Holocaust" will be co-presented by members of the Baeumler Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration Committee.  The final workshop will be a short course on "Teaching the Holocaust through Anne Frank's Diary and Story".
