Laptop Responsibility Sheet
University of Minnesota Duluth, College of Liberal Arts

Responsibility for the Equipment:
As a student participating in the UMD Laptop Program, you are responsible for the computer hardware and software UMD issues to you. This means you are responsible for any damage done to your computer or theft of the unit during the period of time it is assigned to you.

Return of the Equipment: You are required to return the computer, software, associated peripherals and accessories on or before Thursday, December 21, 2006 by NOON to the CLA Student Affairs and Advising Center.

Students who withdraw at any time during spring semester must return the computer to the CLA Student Affairs and Advising Center as a part of completing the withdrawal process. Students who drop below twelve credits during the term will not be allowed to continue using the computer. You must be registered in the current term to participate in this program.

Your Student Financial account will be charged a late fee, $25 per week, for failure to comply with the return policy. Please refer to the contract agreement issued at the same time you received your laptop.

Insurance: Since the University insurance package has a $500 deductible, you are responsible for the first $500 of damage or the first $500 of replacement cost in the case of theft. However, you should check with your parents' or guardian insurance company. In many cases, homeowners or renters insurance will help cover part or all of this deductible. To make sure your computer is covered under your personal insurance, you should ask your insurance company to write a separate rider to the current policy, which specifies the laptop computer. If your laptop is stolen you are required to file a report with the police in the community where the theft occurred. In order to file a claim with the University indicating theft you will need to provide a copy of the police incident report.

Where to Get Help: If your computer fails because of a hardware defect or damage, please bring the unit to the Information Technology Systems and Services (ITSS) maintenance area, located in Kirby Plaza, room 165 (726-7973). ITSS staff will evaluate the hardware and provide a written list of repairs and itemized costs. Repairs required due to a system defect, failure or malfunction will be submitted as a warranty claim and are generally not charged to the customer.

Repairs required due to neglect (such as leaving the computer in the freezing cold in an automobile) or damage done during the period of time the computer has been issued to you (see your computer agreement paragraph two) will be charged to your Student Financial account.

The ITSS Help Desk (phone 726-8847) is available for general questions and information.

Wireless internet connections are available throughout campus.

Please visit the ITSS Computer and Technology Resource page for information on wireless computing.
