SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS


College-Wide Scholarships - Applications for CLA College-Wide Scholarships are generally accepted during spring semester. For further information, contact the CLA College office at cla@d.umn.edu .

CLA Scholarship - This scholarship is given annually to two students who have demonstrated high academic achievement in and commitment to the liberal arts. Students must have completed 60 credits of course work and have an overall GPA of 3.25 or above. CLICK HERE for the scholarship selection criteria and the application form.

Richter Family Scholarship - This need based scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to a deserving student in the College of Liberal Arts.

CLA Department Scholarship - Generally, applications for department scholarship are accepted during spring semester. For further information, please contact the specific department office.

Communication Department:

Virginia T. Katz Scholarship - This scholarship is a competitive award founded by the Communication faculty in honor of our beloved friend and colleague, Ginny Katz. It is granted to that student who demonstrates a strong commitment to leadership, public service and activism, while maintaining a respectable GPA and demonstrating strong interpersonal skills.

Outstanding Academic Achievement - This award is given to students graduating with a major in Communication who have maintained a high GPA.

Outstanding Service - This award is given to the student who boasts both a strong GPA and a remarkable commitment to service at UMD and in the community at large.

John Ness Award - John Ness was a beloved member of the Communication Faculty for 23 years. Each Spring the award is given to the senior graduating in Communication who has demonstrated both outstanding academic achievement and distinguished service to the University.

Composition Department:

Parlay Press Linguistics Award- This award is presented by the UMD Linguistics Program and recognizes an outstanding junior or senior in linguistics. The award is funded by Parlay Press and by royalties from textbooks used in the UMD Linguistics Program.

Gustaf A. Nordin Scholarship- This scholarship is given annually to two students who have demonstrated initiative and excellence in journalism. The award is in memory of Gustaf Nordin, a Duluth native who was a highly respected reporter, editor, political columnist, and radio show host.

English Department:

Joseph Duncan Scholarship- Established by a bequest in the will of Professor Joe Duncan and increased with monetary gifts from his family and friends, the Joseph Duncan scholarship is conferred upon an English Major who has demonstrated outstanding scholastic capability and professional promise.

Ann H. and Alfred Hartley Scholarship- Alfred Hartley created this scholarship in honor of his wife Ann's lifelong interest in English Language and Literature.

Jankofsky Essay Prize - This award is given annually to the best essay on any topic in Medieval and/or Renaissance Studies by a UMD student. This award is made in honor late Professor Klaus Jankofsky and is funded anonymously through the generosity of a former student of Professor Jankofsky.

Michael Robert Lenz Creative Writing Scholarship - This was established by the family of this former UMD English major in order to honor Michael's life and to encourage others as he was encouraged.

Mike Lenz Prize for Imaginative Writing - This award is in memory of former student, Mike Lenz, who was a dedicated and productive creative writer. The prize is given for the best entry in original imaginative literature--narrative, dramatic or lyrical--written in either prose or verse.

John & Ruth Reed Scholarship - John Reed, UMD class of 1959, English Professor at Wayne State, created this scholarship for a student of English in honor of himself and his late wife, Ruth, a graduate of Hope College.

Sigmond & Lena Slonim Scholarship - Created by Dr. Ruth Slonim, in memory of her parents, Sigmond and Lena Slonim, the Slonim Scholarship is conferred upon a senior English major who has demonstrated outstanding scholastic capability, personal effectiveness, and professional promise.

Lawrence Wright Essay Prize - This award is in memory of late Professor Lawrence Wright for the best original critical or analytical essay written on a topic in linguistics, literature or teaching methods.

Foreign Languages and Literatures:


Haike Friedrichsdorf Scholarship - This scholarship is a German foreign study award created in the memory of Ms. Friedrichsdorf, instructor in Foreign Languages & Literatures from 1996 to 2002.

Marinelli Scholarship -This scholarship was begun in 1986 by Angela and Anne V. Marinelli of Hibbing, Minnesota. The scholarship is awarded to two outstanding students in French or Spanish.

Julie Moller Scholarship -This scholarship was begun in 2002 by Dr. Julie Sandford Moller for majors in French, German or Spanish.

Geography Department:

Kaups Geography Scholarship- Professor Kaups is memorialized with this merit based scholarship set up by his family and friends. He was a world renowned scholar of migration and of Nordic cultural traditions brought to the Americas.

History Department:

Washburn Award - The Washburn award is given annually to outstanding history majors. It is named in honor of J.L. Washburn, a prominent Duluth attorney who was the resident director of the Duluth Teachers College (now UMD). He served on the board governing Minnesota's state teachers colleges.

Philosophy Department:

Ehlers Prize - This prize is given each year to the student who submits the best philosophy essay. The award comes from a fund established in memory of Henry Ehlers, the founding faculty member of the Philosophy Department at UMD.

Political Science Department:

M. Harry Lease Jr. Award -This award is given each spring to the best student in a constitutional law course who has financial need.

Gerhard E. von Glahn Scholarship - This scholarship is given each spring to the Political Science sophomore with the best overall GPA; based on third semester GPA.

Rudolph Family Award -This award is given each spring to the undergraduate pre-law student with need who is studying pre-law and/or has the potential to be accepted into law school with need.

Julius F. Wolff, Jr. Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded each spring to the Political Science junior with the highest overall GPA each spring semester.

Sociology/Anthropology Department:

Walter Baeumler Award in Criminology - This award is in honor of Walter Baeumler. Walter led the department through its early years, when anthropology and criminology were added to the programs. He recruited and mentored many of the faculty who have been the mainstay in the department ever since.

Beverly Ecklund Law Enforcement Scholarship - Beverly graduated from UMD, worked 26 years with the Duluth Police Department, and is currently Director of Parking Services at UMD. This scholarship is her way of “giving back” to UMD.

Robert Franz Award in Sociology - This award is in honor of Robert Franz. Bob is someone who gave new meaning to the idea of leadership through service in his multiple stints as department head and other key leadership roles on campus.
