Personal Statement
I love films, but am very frustrated by the short shelf-life of good films at our local theatres and by how many films never make it to Duluth.
I am an avid reader—can’t go to sleep without reading for pleasure. I have a particular interest in novels of “place”. I have been fascinated by novels taking place in the desert Southwest, China, India, Africa and South America. My current favorites include Jacqueline Winspear, Michael Chabon, Barbara Kingsolver, Dara Horn, Anchee Min, Alexander McCall Smith, Isabel Allende, Amy Tan, Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni—but there are so many others, it’s hard to choose.
I’m interested in exploring the nature of journalistic scandals and their modes of apology and repair.
I’m president of the Temple Israel Board of Trustees. I’m the immediate past chair of the UMD Women’s Commission and I chair the CLA Baeumler-Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration Committee. I serve on the CLA Academic Affairs Committee, the UMD Student Behavior Management Committee, the UMD Commission on Disabilities, the UMD GLBT Commission and the UMD Commission on Human Diversity. I also sit on the Cruden Riggs Scholarship Committee and the Darland All-American Scholarship Committee.
