Late Grad running for Pioneer Hall.

1) When is commencement, and how long will it last?

Commencement is Saturday, May 17, 2008 at noon in the Arena at the DECC (Duluth Entertainment Convention Center). Last year, the ceremony was 2 hours and 28 minutes, with about 1,000 graduates marching. The goal is two hours.

2) Where do graduates receive their Latin Honors medallions?

Honors medallions are distributed on commencement day at the DECC. Students not marching will receive an email the middle of April instructing them as to where and when they will pick up their medallions.

3) What do graduates need to do on commencement day?

Graduates need to be in Pioneer Hall at the DECC between 10:30-11:30 a.m. Allow plenty of time to park and find Pioneer Hall. Look for the Graduates Enter Here sign. Maps are available at: http://www.d.umn.edu/commencement/maps

In Pioneer Hall, graduates pick up their name cards and line up for the commencement procession. Complete information is available at: http://www.d.umn.edu/commencement/bachelors/commence_day.html

4) Where is the DECC?

The DECC is on the Duluth waterfront at 350 Harbor Drive. Maps are available at: http://www.d.umn.edu/commencement/maps

5) Where do graduates and their guests park?

There are plenty of parking spaces in the DECC lot and ramp, with additional parking available in downtown Duluth with access to the DECC via skywalk.

6) When should graduates and guests arrive at the DECC?

Early! Graduates and their guests do need to plan ahead to avoid traffic delays. In 2003, traffic backed up on the freeway, with several graduates literally running across the parking lot to get to the DECC in time for the ceremony. Remind out-of-town guests to allow additional time when making their travel plans.

7) Do guests need tickets?

Yes. The number of tickets is determined by dividing the number of fixed seats by the number of students who turned in their Commencement Attendance Questionnaire by February 4, 2008. The tickets are general admission, with the arena doors opening at 10 a.m. Each graduate will receive four tickets.

8) When will tickets be distributed?

Guest tickets are being distributed April 7-25 in UMD Stores, EXPRESS, which is located at 109 Kirby Plaza across from the Northern Shores Coffee Shop. The hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To receive tickets, students must show identification. Tickets will be sent to students no longer on campus; send an email with the address to: commence@d.umn.edu

9) Are there any extra guest tickets?

Any extra tickets will be distributed in a lottery in April. Graduates are able to request one to three extra tickets by signing up for the lottery. The lottery will be the week of April 28, with graduates notified by mail and email. Lottery tickets will be distributed May 1-9 in UMD Stores EXPRESSS.

10) Is seating available for guests with special needs?

Several seats in the arena are reserved for guests with special needs. Ushers will help guests find appropriate seating. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are asked to arrive early to guarantee their needs are met. For questions about additional accommodations, email the Commencement Committee at: commence@d.umn.edu
