Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral Degree Commencement Ceremonies
Academic regalia is mandatory for students participating in the UMD commencement ceremonies and all students are required to bring their regalia to commencement.
UMD has negotiated a contract with the supplier that actually makes it less expensive for you to purchase your regalia rather than rent it.
Where to Get Your Regalia:
Caps, gowns, tassels and hoods are available at Lower Level UMD Stores. Staff can help you obtain the correct academic regalia if you give them the complete title of your degree and your college. Out-of-town students can order their regalia in person or online at UMD Stores online. For information, contact the Lower Level UMD Stores, 218-726-7286.
- Doctoral and Master’s Degrees: In addition to their caps and gowns, students wear an academic hood in the color of their degree or field and are required to bring their hood to the ceremony.
- Bachelor's Degree Gowns: students receiving their bachelor’s degree do not wear hoods.
- Caps: The cap at the University of Minnesota is the same for all academic degrees. When worn, mortarboards should be flat on the head, not tilted. The long point of the shell are worn to the back. Caps are worn throughout the formal academic function.
- Tassels: The color represents the academic discipline; to determine which color tassel you need, check with the UMD Bookstore, or the Commencement webpage.
Undergraduate tassels are fastened to the top of the cap and hang on the right. Tassels should be switched to the left once candidates are recognized on stage. Your degree and field determine your tassel color. Students earning dual degrees are welcome to wear tassel colors from all degrees earned.
Master’s and Doctoral students wear their tassels on the left, like the faculty, and do not switch them during the ceremony. Master's tassels are black, regardless of major field. Doctoral tassels are gold, regardless of major field.
Students are welcome to wear academic and cultural stoles and/or decorate their caps.
Professional photographers from GradImages will be at the ceremony to take three photographs of all graduates. A photographer will take a portrait of you just prior to walking up to the stage to receive your diploma (cover), when you shake hands with the Chancellor or Regent, and a photo at the back of the arena, standing in front of Regents seal of the University of Minnesota holding your diploma cover. Graduates will be emailed a color proof a few weeks following the ceremony. Questions may be emailed to email@example.com. After the ceremony, you may order online at GradImages online or call 800-261-2576.
