Academic Integrity

A letter to all faculty was sent in September with a copy of the new UMD Academic Integrity policy and a flow chart indicating the steps involved in each of the processes. Based upon discussion in the academic integrity subcommittee, the flow chart was updated to include more specific instructions. This revision to the flow chart does not change the Academic Integrity policy itself, it only makes the process consistent with the Academic Grievance policy. A revised version of the flow chart will be made available through the VCASSL website.

Student athlete registration

This topic was brought to EPC in the fall of 03, and a policy was passed in December of 03 allowing varsity student athletes to register on the second day of registration. This policy was implemented on a trial basis for 2 years, which is soon set to expire. Data was distributed from a random sampling of 30 student athletes (10 each from the freshman, sophomore and junior years) from fall 04 and spring 05 that showed the date of original registration, date of priority registration, and dates on which filled courses were closed. Based on this sampling of data, very few courses were closed relative to when student athletes registered. This data indicates that this change in registration status for student athletes has had a minimal impact. The issue of course scheduling needs further investigation. It was suggested that similar data be pulled for Fall 05, with a larger sample size of students. Jerry will contact Jeff Maahs, chair of the Campus Athletic committee to discuss the next steps. It was recommended that this discussion continue this semester in order for a decision to be in place before the next round of registration begins in early spring.
