7/21/08: Results from the Commission on Women's Campus Café

The Commission on Women's Campus Café experience in April 2008 yielded three themes in response to our central question, "Imagine it is five years from now and UMD is the ideal place to work. What would the ideal work climate look and feel like at UMD?" Café participants offered this

The development of such an environment will result in UMD employees and students feeling committed to the UMD community because they perceive that they are valued and validated. Pragmatically, value and validation will come about by way of encouraging campus citizens to continue education and professional development. The "Google" model, allowing employees to use 20% of their time for their own development and creative exploration, is actually already contained within part of UMD's policies--we would like to
see more consistent application of that vision.

Sustainability has become a campus-wide initiative, which we hope will extend to "green" practices in all our operations, including such things as healthier food service.

The Commission on Women will develop a themed wall wherein we will celebrate each other's work and accomplishments. As the CW did in years past, we will extend a "virtual" rose to each other as a way of letting others' know that we have noticed their good work and that we appreciate it. In a “virtual garden” page on our web site, we will also encourage the campus community to"plant a seed" of new and creative ideas to help grown a greener, more sustainable campus community.
