Parental Notification
for Students Under the Age of 21
On- and Off-Campus Alcohol Violations
The University of Minnesota Duluth is committed to providing an environment that promotes student learning and success. We are concerned about the safety and well-being of our students and recognize parents can have a very positive influence on their college student’s choices.
Beginning fall 2009, parental notification for students under the age of 21 applies to both on- and off-campus violations. Parents may be called and a follow-up letter sent when University officials are aware that a student has been transported to detox or hospital, as this is considered a medical emergency. In addition, parents may be notified when a student receives a second or subsequent alcohol citation (e.g., underage consumption of alcohol, under 21 drinking and driving, DWI), or if the University is concerned about the student’s well-being.
The University is legally entitled to notify parents when students engage in alcohol violations if (1) there is a
significant threat to the health or safety of a student or other individuals, or (2) the student signs a waiver allowing the release of the information, or (3) the University can determine if the student is financially dependent on his/her parents for tax purposes.
