Parental Notification

Parental Notification

The University of Minnesota Duluth is committed to providing an environment that promotes student learning and success. We are concerned about the safety and well-being of our students and recognize parents can have a very positive influence on their college student's choices.

Parental notification for students applies to both on- and off-campus violations. Parents may be called and a follow-up letter sent when University officials are aware that a student has been transported to detox or hospital, as this is considered a medical emergency. In addition, parents may be notified when a student receives an underage consumption of alcohol, or drinking and driving, DWI, or if the University is concerned about the student's well-being.

The University is legally entitled to notify parents when students engage in alcohol or drug violations if (1) there is a threat to the health or safety of a student or other individuals, or (2) the student signs a waiver allowing the release of the information, or (3) the University can determine if the student is financially dependent on his/her parents for tax purposes.
