UMD is committed to providing students every possible opportunity to grow in mind and spirit. This pledge can only be redeemed in an environment of trust, honesty, and fairness. As a result, academic dishonesty is regarded as a serious offense by all members of the academic community.

What to do if you suspect academic dishonesty

If you suspect a student has engaged in academic dishonesty, collect all documentation. Examples include the assignment, paper, exam, and any statements you may have from a TA or other witness.

Request that the student meet with you to discuss your suspicions. When you meet with the student, present your evidence, be objective, and explain the problem. Listen to the student's explanation.

If you feel the student is not responsible, the situation resolves itself, and you do not have to do anything. If you believe the student has engaged in academic dishonesty, have the student sign the Report of Academic Dishonesty. Explain to the student that she/he can (1) accept the sanction, or (2) disagree with the allegations and/or sanction. In either case, file the Report of Academic Dishonesty with the academic integrity officer in 245 Kirby Plaza.

If the student accepts the sanction, the academic integrity officer will send a sanction letter to the student, along with a copy of the Report of Academic Dishonesty and the Academic Integrity Policy. The sanction letter restates the faculty member's sanction and gives information on contacting the academic integrity officer if there are any questions or concerns. If the student disagrees with the allegations and/or sanction, the academic integrity officer will contact the student and will explain UMD's Student Academic Grievance Policy.

What does it mean to have academic dishonesty on a student's record?

Student academic dishonesty is a violation of Section V, Subdivision 1 of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents Student Conduct Code. Once a Report of Academic Dishonesty is filed with the academic integrity officer, a file is created and is kept for a period of seven years. These records are confidential and are protected by federal law. Unless a student signs a waiver to release their disciplinary record (e.g., background checks for employment with the federal government or law enforcement agencies), records are not shared with other people.

Is there a notation on a student's official transcript?

There is no notation on a student's official transcript to indicate she/he has engaged in academic dishonesty. Likewise, if a student received a grade of F due to academic dishonesty, there is no notation on the official transcript.
