UMD students have access to a variety of computing facilities

C.S. Computing Facilities.

The Department of Computer Science has two instructional laboratories:  the C.S. Software Development Lab and the Wireless Multimedia Classroom/Lab.

The CS Software Development Lab contains 26 SunBlade 100/500 workstations with SunPCI co-processors and 18" flat LCD monitors, a laser printer, and other supporting peripherals.  The CS network uses 1Gb switched Ethernet technology, with 100Mb service to the desktop and 1GB service to the UMD backbone.  The computers run under Sun's Solaris operating system, with various GNU software packages added on, including the GNU compilers, emacs, the KDE window manager, and other miscellaneous software that particular courses require.  The PCs operate under the Windows XP Professional operating system.  Since Computer Science is a member of the Microsoft Campus Agreement Program - a software leasing program - the primary software packages installed on the PC cards are web browsing programs, anti-virus software, and a broad range of Microsoft products.

The Software Development Lab is an open laboratory for CS majors.  The lab is staffed by Computer Science Graduate Teaching Assistants and is typically open from 8:00am-8:00pm M-Th, 8:00am-4:00pm F, and 12:00pm-8:00pm on Sunday.

The entire space occupied by Computer Science has wireless access to the network for use by its students, faculty, and staff.  The Wireless Multimedia Classroom/Laboratory enables those students who do not own laptops to experience the use of wireless technology.  The lab consists of 20 Micron PC laptops with 1.7 GHz processors and 20 Compaq handheld computers.  The laptops are well configured and run under Windows 2000 Pro and Linux.  The computers contain software similar to that described above for the Software Development Lab.  All recitation sections of our lower-level courses are held in this laboratory.  Since the lab is used as a classroom and as a closed laboratory for some of the Information Systems & Technology courses during the daytime, it is only opened for public use from 5:00pm-8:00pm M-Th and 12:00pm-8:00pm on Sunday.

Students can use the software provided on the laptops or gain remote access via the network to Unix-based computers.

Computer Science also provides other facilities to our students.  All students have access to a Linux compute server maintained by the Department - a Dell PowerEdge 2600 dual processor 2.8 GHz Pentium 4.  This server can be accessed from any laboratory computer.  In addition, students enrolled in certain advanced courses have access to other specialized departmental computers, for example, a Beowulf Linux Cluster with 9 Pentium processors and a Magellan Robot.
