Summary:  Project aimed at determining the economic feasibility of powering Silver Bay’s Eco-industrial Business Park with some combination of locally generated renewable energy including wind, solar, biomass and biodiesel from algae.

Title: Locally Adapted Food System Assessment

Summary: This project will describe the agricultural landscape of a fifteen county area in Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin, including its capacity to provide food for the regional population. The University expertise in this proposal includes ethnographic interviewing, geographic information systems data development and analysis, and community economic analysis. The outcomes of this work will provide a research-based assessment of the current food system; including community supported agriculture, livestock producers, wild food harvesters and commercial growers.

Summary:  Project aimed at developing a GIS Modeling tool for analyzing St. Louis County School District’s busing routes.  We are interested in maximizing transportation cost savings, and minimizing the time children spend on the school bus given a wide variety of school configurations within this large district.

Title: Wind Analysis for Hill City, MN

Summary:  Project aimed at teaching a Hill City High School Science Class how to monitor their wind resource, and estimate the economic feasibility of installing a wind turbine on their high school campus, or on Quadna Mountain for community ownership.

Title: Wind Resource Development in the Minnesota Coastal Zone

Summary:  Project aimed at monitoring the wind at 8 sites along the North Shore of Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage, using the data to develop a high resolution wind resource map of the region, and working with several communities interested in developing their wind resource.
