Information for students on the Wireless Computing Initiative in the
Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE)
The purpose of the SCSE wireless computing initiative is to enhance the
technological environment of the science and engineering classroom and
to better prepare UMD graduates to be competitive in the work force. Technology
continues to change and improve at a rapid pace, and practicing professionals
in engineering, the sciences, industry, health services, and information
technology need to keep current with technology options. It is the goal
of SCSE that our graduates be among the most prepared and competitive
in this rapidly changing world.
UMD offers a wireless computing network in
many areas around campus and is expanding coverage to many classrooms.
Wireless computing may be used in a variety of ways in SCSE classes. Students
are able to generate or acquire data files during lab or lecture, return
to a desktop environment, and continue work. The wireless environment
made possible with these computing devices provides efficient and accurate
interaction with course materials. Students can access the internet and
their email without having to go into a computer lab. Class-related documents
(lecture notes, assignments and syllabi) and software are available through
the wireless network. The intent is to provide students with a powerful,
flexible and mobile computing environment.
Students in SCSE should consider purchasing a wireless computing device
for use in their classes. This can be a handheld computer, a tablet computer
or a laptop PC. Departments may have recommendations to assist students
in deciding. In order to communicate with the wireless network, the computing
device will need to conform to the 802.11b wireless standard. Assistance
with device configuration is available through Information Technology
Systems and Services (ITSS), although extra charges may apply. The UMD
Computer Corner will carry a variety of wireless computing options
and peripheral equipment that meets the UMD standard for accessing the
university’s wireless network. It may be a good idea to wait until
after you arrive at UMD, and observe and use a variety of devices, before
deciding what to purchase. Good general advice is available at Collegiate
Unit Technology Requirements 2007-08.
SCSE is committed to providing students with a high quality education
to prepare them for the continuing changes in technology. If parents or
students have general questions, they may contact the College office at
csesa@d.umn.edu. Specific information
on UMD student computing resources can be found at http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/students/
