Applications are now being accepting for the annual FinnFest USA ’02 Scholarship. Scholarships are available to full-time, junior, senior, or graduate level students at UMD and students planning to study abroad. Preference is given to students of Finnish heritage. Students must self-identify for eligibility. Application materials are available in 315 Darland Administration Building, deadline for application is April 21. The application process has begun for the National Sea Grant Knauss Fellows program. It is open to University of Minnesota graduate students interested in ocean, coastal, or Great Lakes policy. The one-year fellowship, based in Washington, D.C., begins in February 2004. This program pays a stipend and living expenses. Fellows are selected through a competitive process. Applications are due to Minnesota Sea Grant by May 9.

Techfest is searching for on-going booth demonstration that demonstrate successful ways to use technology. This demonstration might showcase a technical presentation, a computer application, a time/cost saving method of sharing information, or an application of technology we have not considered. All members of the UMD community are invited to nominate any current or former UMD faculty or staff woman for the Linda Larson-Commission on Women, Woman of the Year Award. The nomination should be in the form of a letter that includes the following: 1. The name of the woman being nominated including contact information for her; 2. A description of the activities that show outstanding contribution to the continuing improvement of women’s experiences at UMD and in Duluth at large; and 3. The name and contact information for the person(s) nominating this individual. Please deliver nomination letters to The Commission on Women’s office, 420 Darland Administration Building by March 30. This award will be presented at the Commission on Women’s Spring Lunch on May 7.

Departments are invited participate in Take Our Children to Work Day to be held at UMD on April 24. Departments are invited to present a 45-minute workshop on careers related to the department at either 9 -10 a.m. or 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. For more information call 726-6292.


The eleventh annual Joel Labovitz Entrepreneurial Success Awards (Labo Awards) will celebrate entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship in the Arrowhead Region of Minnesota from 11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. on May 21, at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center. Nominators need to provide the name, address and telephone number of the nominee and a brief description of nominees accomplishments, the award category, and the name, address, and telephone number of individual making the nomination. The nomination categories include:Micro-Entrepreneur Award, Emerging Entrepreneur Award, Gazelle (Enterprise) Entrepreneur Award, Mature Entrepreneur Award, Recognizing New Technology Emerging Regionally Award, David A. Martin Entrepreneurial Leadership Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
