LLOYDS PRAYER WINS
Three UMD theatre students have won awards at the regional American College
Theater Festival held in Denver. Ben Elledge was one of two students to
win an Irene Ryan Acting Award. He will compete against 15 other students
at the Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival in Washington
D.C., in April. Jason Peterson won the Best Scene Partner Award. Blake
Hogue's 10-minute play, "While We're Stopped," was voted People's
Choice Award.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
The Great Lakes Aquarium and the University of Minnesota Sea Grant program
are recruiting student volunteers to assist in carrying out their educational
missions. The exciting, new Partners in Education program
is seeking education, outdoor education, and recreation students with
good communication skills and an enthusiasm for learning and working with
students of all ages. Training sessions begin Tuesday, February 3 from
6 - 8 p.m.

STUDENT WEB CONTEST 2004
Up to five $500 awards will be given for this years student web
contest. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the contest.
The project is to develop a Web site for an undergraduate course and/or
Web based materials for an undergraduate course. The deadline for submission
is Friday, January 30, 2004. Each student must have an identified
faculty or departmental sponsor.

MORRIS K. UDALL SCHOLARSHIP NOMINATIONS
Two types of Scholarship are available: $5,000 scholarships for all students
in studies related to the environment, and $5,000 for Native Americans
or Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal policy. Students
must be college juniors or seniors during the 2004-2005 academic year
and must be nominated by their institution.
Because environmental issues can be approached in a multidisciplinary
way, the scholarship is offered to students from a broad range of disciplines.
The UMD deadline for applications is February 24 by 4:30 p.m. to
209 Bohannon Hall. Scholarships will be awarded in late April 2004.

UMD OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS
It is time again to nominate eligible civil service and academic professional
employees for Outstanding Service Awards. The date of the ceremony and
the deadline for nominations has been changed. All nomination forms must
be submitted by Monday, February 2, at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony
will be held on Tuesday, April 27 from 3- 5 p.m. in the Kirby Ballroom.

JOSIE R. JOHNSON HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
AWARD
Faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in the nomination
process for the 2004 Josie R. Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice
Award. The award is designed to honor faculty, staff and students who
have made outstanding contributions to the University and external community
in the areas of human rights and social justice.
The award seeks to honor one University of Minnesota faculty or staff
member and one student who, through their principles and practices, exemplify
Johnsons standard of excellence in creating respectful and inclusive
living, learning, and working environments.
Nominees must be a current faculty member, staff member or student in
good academic standing at the University of Minnesota. The selection committee
is composed of current faculty, staff and students. The awards will be
presented at the University of Minnesotas Community Service Award
Recognition Ceremony. A $1,000 stipend will be awarded to each of the
recipients.
To nominate an individual who you feel exemplifies these ideals and meets
the above criteria, please submit the following items as a packet to the
Office for Multicultural and Academic Affairs, by February 13: A letter
of nomination, the nominees current resume or curriculum vitae,
a minimum of three letters of support documenting the nominees contributions
to human rights and social justice.

NEMBA NOMINATIONS
The deadline for nominations to the 16 annual Northeastern Minnesota Book
Awards is February 1. Presented by the University of Minnesota
Duluth Library and Friends of the Duluth Public Library, these awards
recognize books that substantially represent the history, culture, heritage
or lifestyle of northeastern Minnesota.
To be eligible, a book must have been originally released in 2003. Books
may be nominated in one of two categories: (1) fiction, poetry, drama
or (2) nonfiction, art, scholarship. Prizes will be awarded in the amount
of $300 for each winner and $100 for each honorable mention selected.

requests from retirees who want to spend summers in northeastern Minnesota.
