NEW FACULTY AND STAFF ARRIVE
UMD welcomed 51 new faculty members at a campus
orientation on September 3. Various speakers discussed unique aspects
of UMD. Campus tours were provided and collegiate units offered follow-up
orientation sessions. An all-campus faculty breakfast was held earlier
that day, where all new faculty were introduced by their deans. Thirteen
P & As (professional and administrative) personnel were hired this
fall.
New civil service and union staff are provided
with packets by the UMD Human Resources Office and that office met with
each new person to discuss details of the materials and benefits. For
information contact the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Administration.
WEBER MUSIC HALL AWARD TO MBJ, INC
MBJ, Inc., structural engineers for the UMD Weber
Music Hall, recently received an Excellence in Structural Engineering
award. Given annually by The National Council of Structural Engineers
Association (NCSEA), the award recognizes creativity and innovation in
structural design.
Paul Johnson, senior structural engineer and manager
of MBJs Duluth office, credited the projects success to the
cooperative relationships established among architects, engineers, and
contractors, as well the detailer, fabricator, and erector. The 350-seat
Weber Music Hall has been hailed as the gem in UMDs
arts triangle because of its soaring copper dome and superior acoustical
environment.
Cesar Pelli & Associates (New Haven, CT) was
commissioned as architectural designer to provide an intimate setting
for musical performance at UMD. MBJ worked with Pelli and architect of
record SJA to develop a 3D digital model of the buildings roof.
Because a large volume of air was needed within the hall to carry sound,
engineers and architects had to find a way to, literally, raise
the roof high enough to create the superior acoustics for which
the hall is now acclaimed. The end result was an 80-foot-high dome set
atop a very small footprint of 10,000 square feet. UMD photographer, Brett
Groehler, provided the photographs for the award submission.
