academic NEWS

The 2006-07 (final), 2007-08 (tentative) academic calendars are attached and have been posted on the UMD website at http://www.d.umn.edu/calendar/academic_cal.html. The 2008-09 (tentative) academic calendar is available on the
printed copy of this issue of Currents and by contacting Steve Hedman at 726-8839 or shedman@d.umn.edu.

The UMD Center for Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies in the Department of Social Work has received a one-year, $770,000 Title IV-E, contract from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to educate Master of Social Work (MSW) students to work in the field of public child welfare. The mission of the center and the purpose of the grant are to promote the development of culturally competent advanced generalist social workers, practitioners, and leaders to serve at-risk children and their families through county and tribal agencies, focusing on Northern Minnesota.

This contract will enable the Department to offer up to $10,000 in annual stipends to selected Child Welfare Scholars in the MSW Program. These 27 scholars will then take a specified curriculum and field experience in preparation for working in public child welfare settings. Students on the Duluth campus, and in the distance MSW program, which meets in Bemidji and Hibbing, are supported through the Child Welfare Scholars Program.

All individuals receiving sponsored grants or contracts, including Graduate School Grants-In-Aid, must complete two separate workshops in the responsible conduct of research. These workshops can be completed in either order and both will be available this fall at UMD delivered through interactive television. Workshops have been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November 16 and 30.

Attendees must make reservations, as space is limited. Call UMD’s Sponsored Project Administration (SPA) Office at 726-7582. For further details about RCR workshops see: http://www.research.umn.edu/first/.

Students will have the ability to experience the senior-level international management course focusing on the emerging economies and the European Union, to be offered on the campus of American University in Bulgaria during May Session 2006. The program will explore the concepts of international management in the context of the expanding European Union managerial environment. Students will also interact with local businesses and entrepreneurs and integrate the coursework with their real-life experiences from the new setting. This program is the first study abroad program for Labovitz School of Business and Economics, and was designed by Sanjay Goel, associate professor.
It is offered through UMD’s International Education office and coordinated by Maria Vuldjeva, 726-6673, mvuldjev@d.umn.edu.
