CHILD WELFARE CENTER AWARD
The UMD Center for Regional and Tribal Child Welfare Studies in the Department
of Social Work has received a one-year, $770,000 Title IV-E, contract
from the Minnesota Department of Human Services to educate Master of Social
Work (MSW) students to work in the field of public child welfare. The
mission of the center and the purpose of the grant are to promote the
development of culturally competent advanced generalist social workers,
practitioners, and leaders to serve at-risk children and their families
through county and tribal agencies, focusing on Northern Minnesota.
This contract will enable the Department to offer up to $10,000 in annual
stipends to selected Child Welfare Scholars in the MSW Program. These
27 scholars will then take a specified curriculum and field experience
in preparation for working in public child welfare settings. Students
on the Duluth campus, and in the distance MSW program, which meets in
Bemidji and Hibbing, are supported through the Child Welfare Scholars
Program.
RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT IN RESEARCH
All individuals receiving sponsored grants or contracts, including Graduate
School Grants-In-Aid, must complete two separate workshops in the responsible
conduct of research. These workshops can be completed in either order
and both will be available this fall at UMD delivered through interactive
television. Workshops have been tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, November
16 and 30.
Attendees must make reservations, as space is limited. Call UMDs
Sponsored Project Administration (SPA) Office at 726-7582. For further
details about RCR workshops see: http://www.research.umn.edu/first/.
