STATE OF THE U ADDRESS
The annual State of the University Address, delivered by University President Robert H. Bruininks, will be broadcast “live” on the UMD campus, from 3 - 4 p.m. on March 1 in Library, 410. An interactive question-and-answer period will follow the speech. UMD Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Administration Steve Hedman will serve as room host. Everyone is invited to attend. The Commencement Committee is once again looking for volunteers for UMD’s commencement ceremonies. Help our graduates celebrate their special day. Both ceremonies are a lot of fun!
The Graduate Program Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, in the Romano Gymnasium. Volunteers are needed from 5 - 7 p.m. to hand out programs, to line up the graduates, and to answer guest and student questions.
The Undergraduate Program Ceremony will be held at noon, Saturday, May 12 in the DECC Arena. Guest tickets are required for the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. So far, about 1,037 students are participating in the ceremony. Volunteers will receive a special seat in the VIP section on the arena floor for the commencement ceremony. Volunteers are needed from 10 a.m. - noon to help the graduates line up, to hand out programs, and to help guests in the VIP section.
This is a great opportunity to be part of UMD’s largest annual celebration. The volunteers meeting is Wednesday, May 9 at 2 p.m. in the Administrative Conference Room, 520 DAdB. Call Lucy Kragness at 726-6176, if interested.
HOST TURKISH MUSICIANS
SFA is looking for Duluth families to host fifty Turkish students who will travel to Duluth to participate in Turkish-American Alliance Masterworks Concerts. They arrive on April 28 and depart May 8. During that time, they will collaborate with UMD students to perform three concerts, Friday May 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Weber Music Hall, Saturday May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ted Mann Concert Hall, Minneapolis and again in the Weber on May 6 at 3 p.m. SFA will provide meal passes for lunch and dinner on campus. KUMD has announced upcoming in-studio performances.
Joey DeFrancesco, jazz organist joins KUMD in the studio at 3 p.m. on March 2. He’ll perform at 7:30 p.m. the same night at the Weber Music Hall.
Cosy Sheridan is one of the pre-eminent songwriters on the folk scene documenting the lives of modern women. Cosy will be joining KUMD at 3 p.m. on March 7.
Kelly Joe Phelps, songwriter, performs country, blues and folk. He’ll drop by the KUMD studio for a session at 3 p.m. on March 8. He performs at Beaner’s Central the same night at
7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Lonnie Knight is a multiple winner for best guitarist at the Minnesota Music Awards. He will be in the KUMD studio at 1 p.m. on March 9.
Piper’s Crow is a Celtic quartet that mixes jigs, slides and hornpipes to create a crowd pleasing performance. Join KUMD for a session with this Celtic quartet from Minneapolis at 3 p.m. on March 9. They will perform at the Sacred Heart Music Center the same night at 7:30 p.m.
Sweet Wednesday performs both as an acoustic duo featuring vocals, guitar, harmonica and mandolin, and with a band. Join KUMD for a session with this duo at 1 p.m. on March 16. They perform the same night at 8 p.m. at Beaner’s Central.
The Soweto Gospel Choir with 26 members, recruits the best talent from churches around the Soweto area. Join KUMD for this session at 1 p.m. on March 20. The choir will perform the same night at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) at 7:30 p.m.
Folk singer/songwriter Pete Morton has an original folk style. Join KUMD for a session with this folk singer/songwriter from Nottingham, England, at 3 p.m. on March 22. He performs the same night at Beaner’s Central.
Listen to KUMD's newest program, Rainbow Connection: the Music Mix, at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays on KUMD. It’s a half hour of music from GLBT artists.
