The Swenson College of Science and Engineering was named after longtime UMD benefactor and chemistry alumnus James Swenson, ‘59. The announcement of the new name and gifts from James and Susan Swenson and the Swenson Family Foundation was made Sept. 21 by UMD Chancellor Martin and Dean Riehl. Swenson gifts have now reached $21 million, including new donations of $7.7 million for science and research scholarships and $3 million toward construction of the new civil engineering building.

On October 6, 56 first year medical students will receive their white coats in the Weber Music Hall. Called the White Coat Ceremony, the program emphasizes learning compassion along with science. A reception will be held in the Medical School atrium.

The College of Pharmacy, Duluth, is scheduling appointments for their Pharmaceutical Care Clinic. This fall’s clinic is a required activity for student pharmacists and provides an opportunity for them to help people with their medications under the supervision of an experienced pharmacist. During the appointment, the student pharmacist will conduct a thorough review of medical history and medications. Following the appointment, the student will work to develop a plan for ensuring medications are used appropriately, are working, are safe, and are convenient and will provide recommendations to resolve any medication related problems. Because patients are participating in our student’s education, this service is free. To receive more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 218-726-6800. Clinics are scheduled for the afternoons of October 15 and 16 and November 5, 6, 19, and 20.

Up to five $500 awards will be given for this year’s student web contest. Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for the contest. The project is to develop a Web site for an undergraduate course and/or Web based materials for an undergraduate course. The deadline for submission is Friday, January 25, 2008. Each student must have an identified faculty or departmental sponsor.
For details on the contest visit: http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/etrg/webcontest.html.
If a student is interested and needs a faculty or department sponsor, or if the faculty or departmental sponsor is looking for a student, please call Sheri Pihlaja at 726-6975 or email spihlaja@d.umn.edu
