ACADEMIC AFFAIRS UPDATES
Academic Affairs recently announced the opening of the Writers’ Workshop, UMD’s new campus-wide writing center. Staff and faculty, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, are invited to visit the Workshop for a one-on-one session with a graduate or faculty writing consultant. Writers in any discipline, at any stage in the writing process, and at any level are welcome. Under the leadership of Jill Jenson, associate professor of writing studies and faculty liaison for writing and learning, the Writers’ Workshop is a partner in the newly constructed Learning Commons, located on the second floor of the Library. CLASS OF 2011-2012 HIGHLIGHTS
The 2011-12 Graduate Follow-up By Major Reports is now on the Career and Internship Services website. Staff from the office of Career Services surveyed UMD alumni who received undergraduate degrees between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. Out of a total of 1901 undergraduate students granted degrees during the time frame, 1729 graduates (91%) responded to the survey. Of those 1729 graduates, 1656 (96%) reported being "employed" or "continuing education."

STUDENT LIFE UPDATES
The Office of Student Life is seeking faculty and staff to serve on the Student Services Fee Committee alongside UMD students. Individuals with a broad knowledge of UMD, a concern for the needs of students, and who are interested in being involved in how student services fees are allocated, are invited to apply for one of the openings on the Student Services Fees Committee. The committee works from November through March, and the commitment to serve on the committee includes at least one Saturday in the spring semester. Visit the Student Services Fees and Student Services Fees Committee web sites to learn more. Applications are due by Fri., Oct.11.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information about events via the easy-to-use Bulldog Update form. The Bulldog Update is a weekly digest of campus activities and news that is sent to all students in the form of an email with links to more detailed information on the Bulldog Update website.
DIVERSITY FUNDS AVAILABLE
Limited funds are available to support UMD-centered activities sponsored by UMD staff (civil service bargaining and non-bargaining employees) and students or student organizations that focus on diversity, discrimination, social justice, sexual harassment prevention, equal opportunity/affirmative action, and inclusivity.
Effective 2012-2013, $2,000 has been allocated on a recurring basis for diversity initiatives for students and/or student organizations, and $3,000 has been allocated on a recurring basis for staff (civil service bargaining and non-bargaining employees) diversity initiatives. Small grants (up to $300) may be awarded to staff (civil service bargaining and non-bargaining employees) and individual students or student organizations. Major grants ($301 and above) may also be awarded to staff (civil service bargaining and non-bargaining employees) and individual students or student organizations.
The purpose of this grant program is to advance Goal 2 of UMD's Strategic Plan. Applications are accepted beginning July 1 of each year and will continue on a rolling basis throughout the academic year as long as funds are available. KUMD 103.3 FM kicks off the school year with a new feature: "UMD Top Dog."
Each week The Basement shares the accomplishments of an outstanding UMD student on the air and online. Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to nominate a UMD student who deserves to be recognized for their achievements on campus. Nominated students should demonstrate campus leadership and exemplify a UMD core value: discovery, engagement, inclusiveness, sustainability, integrity, and excellence, in the areas of academic, social, community, athletic, political, civic, or cultural leadership. One student may be nominated multiple times, but a student will only be honored as "UMD Top Dog" once per semester. Although recent accomplishments are key, KUMD will consider previous nominations throughout the semester.
The Basement is KUMD’s student run radio, airing each night between 9 pm and 3 am. It features a variety of music genres and shows, from indie rock to metal. KUMD’s student DJ’s produce the programming all year long.
“MN Reads” radio show to debut.
KUMD will introduce its new radio show “MN Reads”, a weekly program about books written by Minnesota authors. “MN Reads” is a weekly 5-minute segment, produced by KUMD and hosted by Northland Morning host Lisa Johnson. Episodes will feature books from the University of Minnesota Press, The Minnesota Historical Society, and other Minnesota publishing houses. Alison Aune, professor, Department of Art and Design, has paintings in the exhibition "4 from the North: New Works by Alison Aune, Ann Jenkins, Ann Klefstad, and Arna Rennan" at the Norwegian-American Vesterheim Museum in Decorah, Iowa, through Apr. 16, 2014.
Joseph Bauerkemper, assistant professor, Department of American Indian Studies, published "Tensing, Dancing, Hoping: The Future Past of Settler Empire" in the journal Settler Colonial Studies. He also published an entry on the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case California v. Cabazon in Multicultural America: A Multimedia Encyclopedia.
Sean Bedard-Parker, accreditation coordinator, Department of Education, applied for and received elevated status as a national referee for the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NISOA). It is his second year with this status, requiring annual assessments of his officiating skills and a passing score on the NISOA fitness test. He currently referees amateur, high school, and university levels.
Josh Berlo, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the entire Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, have been working to increase emphasis on fan experience and engagement, while also working to grow the national profile of UMD Athletics. Gloria DeFilipps Brush, professor, Department of Art and Design, has work in the invitational "Ossuaries" exhibition at the University of Tennessee Downtown Gallery in Knoxville from Oct. 5–26. L.B. Clark, professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin Madison, curated the exhibition.
Jill Doerfler, associate professor, Department of American Indian Studies, gave an invited presentation "'Who Are We?' Blood Quantum, Identity, and Tribal Citizenship" for the Sustain Oneida Enrollment Summit, hosted by the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin in September.
Aydin Durgunoglu, professor and interim department head, Department of Psychology, is a recipient of the 2013 Award for Global Engagement for her many years of outstanding international contributions in the field of literacy acquisition and bilingualism. The all-University award is given to current faculty and staff in recognition of outstanding contributions to global research, education, and engagement. A faculty member who receives the Award for Global Engagement is designated throughout their careers at the University of Minnesota as a “Distinguished Global Professor.” Durgunoglu will be honored at a ceremony on the Twin Cities campus during International Education Week, Nov. 18–22.
Jason Ford, associate professor, Department of Philosophy, conducted the first meeting of the Philosophical Salon (a program of community outreach, wherein the public is welcome to a brief presentation on an issue of philosophical interest, with substantial discussion following). The Salon, hosted by Adeline Wright (Adeline Inc., 1132 E. 9th Street, Duluth), is meant to recapture some of the intellectual life of the great French Salons of old. The first meeting was in August. Its topic was "What Is Philosophy?" The next meeting will be Oct. 11 at 5:30 pm. The topic will be "The Basics of Ethics."
Dalibor Froncek, professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, presented a lecture, "Distance magic and distance antimagic graphs," to the University of Wisconsin-Superior Math Club.
Joseph Gallian, professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was recently inducted into the UMD Academy of Science and Engineering. This honor was given in recognition of his many achievements, including running one of the oldest Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs in the country here at UMD. He also gave two talks at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma in Sept. One of the talks attracted over 300 people as part of a President Lecture Series.
Jenny Herman and Jennifer Pontinen, both Northeast Minnesota Small Business Development Center business consultants with UMD’s Center for Economic Development, were invited to present at the 33rd annual America's Small Business Development Center's Conference held in September in Orlando, Fla. Their practical hands-on session, "Putting the Pieces Together," highlighted tools available for business consultants to help small business owners better understand the financial situation of their business. Herman and Pontinen developed these tools to assist their own clients in Northeast Minnesota.
Fujen Daniel Hsiao, assistant professor, Department of Accounting, and his coauthors, Ling-Ling Chang, Ming-Chuan University, Taiwan, and Yann-Ching Tsai, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, had their article, “Earnings, Institutional Investors, Tax Avoidance, and Firm Value: Evidence from Taiwan,” published in the Journal of International Accounting, Auditing, and Taxation, Volume 22 (2013), pp. 98-108.
Susan Maher, dean, College of Liberal Arts, had her book Artifacts and Illuminations: Critical Essays on Loren Eiseley selected for a 2013 Nebraska Book Award. She co-edited the book with Tom Lynch (University of Nebraska), who also co-wrote the introduction with her. In addition, Maher contributed an essay entitled "'The Places Below:' Mapping the Invisible Universe in Loren Eiseley's Plains Essays" to the anthology. The award ceremony will be held Oct. 26 at the Nebraska State Historical Society's Museum of Nebraska History in Lincoln.
David McCarthy, professor, Department of Education, recently spoke at the Association of Teacher Educator’s (ATE) national conference in Washington, D.C. He presented the 3-hour pre-conference workshop on technology entitled, “Discover New Technology Tools to Enhance your 21st Century Face-to-Face or On-Line Classrooms." He also conducted two additional technology sessions that focused on developing QR Codes and another on utilizing Google Drive Forms. Further, he serves as ATE's development specialist in technology.
Ganapathy Natarajan, assistant professor, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, was awarded Professional Engineering Manager (P.E.M.) certification by the American Society for Engineering Management in June. D. Wyrick, Natarajan, and C. Eseonu, had their article, "Technology Policy for Promoting Environmental Sustainability in SMEs: Issues and Considerations for Effective Implementation," published in Advances in Sustainable and Competitive Manufacturing Systems, Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering 2013, pp. 1237-1248.
John Pastor, professor, Rachel MaKarrell, instructor, and Teri Power, alumnus, all from the Department of Biology, have a show entitled "From the Lake to the Forest" at the Merrill Lynch Gallery of the Great Lakes Aquarium through Jan. 27. Their drawings, paintings, and fiber art are inspired by three state natural areas in the Lake Superior watershed.
Amy Prunuske, assistant professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School; Janelle Wilson, professor, Department of Sociology/Anthropology; Melissa Walls, assistant professor, Department of Biobehavioral Health & Population Sciences, Medical School; and Benjamin Clarke, associate professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School; recently had their article, "Experiences of Mentors Training Underrepresented Undergraduates in the Research Laboratory," published in the journal CBE- Life Sciences Education (Volume 12, Fall 2013).
Guy W Sander, assistant professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, co-authored a chapter, with J. Shanks and L. Zhao, entitled “Perspectives of the Metabolic Engineering of Terpenoid Indole Alkaloids in Catharanthus roseus Hairy Roots” to be published in Biotechnology of Hairy Root Systems, P. Doran (ed.), as part of the series, Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology, Berlin: Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2013.
Eun-Kyung Suh, associate professor, Department of Art and Design, has her works featured in a new exhibit, "Away from Home," at the Dittmar Memorial Gallery, Norris University Center, Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., through Oct. 20. The exhibit explores the Diaspora experience of Korean immigrants and Korean adoptees in the United States. Silk panels and boxes are punctuated with images and texts that have been printed directly onto the fabric. The anecdotal nature of these images, give viewers a window into the experience of cultural identification. Using color, “Sympathies”, “R(H)yeon’s Journey”, and “Blue + Red” convey the emotion and experience of Diaspora in the United States. Through these three projects, Suh has created a broader dialogue to encapsulate her experiences with Diaspora.

Medical School-Duluth NewsEmily Onello, assistant professor, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Duluth, gave a public presentation at the Superior Public Library in September as part of the National Pollution Prevention week activities. Onello spoke about the human health impact of airborne pollution, in particular, the short and long term increased risk of cardiovascular disease (including heart attacks, dangerous or fatal heart rhythms, heart failure, and hardening of the arteries) associated with pollution exposure. She emphasized the need to think "beyond tobacco smoke" when thinking about airborne pollution that is harmful and reminded people that the same choices that reduce pollution (choosing to walk or bike instead of drive) also improve personal health.

Dee Angradi, program analyst, and Jesse Schomberg, coastal communities and land use planning extension educator talked with City of Duluth Employees about water safety at the Bridge to Wellness Heath Fair, in Duluth, Minn., in September.
Doug Jensen, aquatic invasive species program coordinator, supported Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! outreach at the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Fishing Tournament, in Cass Lake, Minn., Sept. 13–14. The Great Lakes Sea Grant Network is partnering with the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit, The Walleye Federation, Future Fishing Foundation, The Bass Federation, National Professional Anglers Association, Wildlife Forever, and others to educate professional anglers and operators about how to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
Marte Kitson, aquatic invasive species specialist and national park service liaison, hosted a Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! and Habitattitude booth at the Lakewalk Festival, in Duluth, Minn., in September.
Kitson attended the Native American Fish and Wildlife Society Conference in Mahnomen, MN, Sept. 8–13 and presented "Spread the Word, Not the Species: Great Lakes Region Takes Action Against Aquatic Invasive Species."
Schomberg was interviewed by Raeanna Marnati from Northland News on climate change and fish. The segment aired on Sept. 6.
Natural Resources Research Institute NewsRobert Lodge and Harold Gibson, both from Laurentian University, Ontario; Greg Stott, Ontario Geological Survey; George Hudak, associate department director, NRRI; Mark Jirsa, Minnesota Geological Survey; and Mike Hamilton, University of Toronto, Ontario, published an article titled, "New U–Pb geochronology from Timiskaming-type assemblages in the Shebandowan and Vermilion greenstone belts, Wawa subprovince, Superior Craton: Implications for the Neoarchean development of the southwestern Superior Province" in the journal Precambrian Research, 2013, pp. 264–277.
NRRI will take part in a $2.9 million research effort for Great Lakes restoration projects funded by the University of Michigan Water Center. The two-year grants, which range in size from $155,358 to $458,290, were awarded to multidisciplinary teams led by researchers at universities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, and New York. The projects will support efforts to: restore native fish migrations across the Great Lakes Basin, assess strategies to restore the health of the Green Bay ecosystem under a changing climate, improve water quality in the Western Lake Erie Basin, guide ecological restoration of Saginaw Bay, assess the effectiveness of wetlands restoration projects in the Lake Ontario/St. Lawrence River watershed, determine the relative contributions of agricultural runoff and sewage discharge in fecal pollution entering lakes Michigan and Erie, and map Great Lakes environmental stressors. NRRI Interim Director Lucinda Johnson received $458,290 to lead research on “A comprehensive stressor-response model to inform ecosystem restorations across the Great Lakes Basin.” The project will combine data from two recent studies that characterized the impacts of human activities across the Great Lakes Basin: the Great Lakes Environmental Assessment and Mapping Project (GLEAM) and the Great Lakes Environmental Indicators (GLEI) project. The new Water Center-funded effort will combine GLEI and GLEAM stressor maps into a single composite map spanning the entire basin. In addition, the researchers will identify and calibrate indicators of biological conditions for nearshore and offshore habitats using GLEAM/GLEI stressors. Co-researchers are J. Andriy Khotkevych, research associate, presented a poster, co-authored by Don Fosnacht, director, NRRI's Center for Applied Research and Technology Development, titled "Hydrothermal Carbonization as a Versatile Biomass Pretreatment Technology" at the tcbiomass2013 International Conference, held in Chicago in September.
Pharmacy Department NewsKerry Fierke, assistant professor, and Margarette Kading, teaching assistant, presented the poster "Creating International Opportunities and Practice/Professional Visions in the Pharmacy Classroom" at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Annual Meeting in July in Chicago.
Fierke, P. L. Ranelli, professor, and R. C. Smith, research assistant, published "Leadership.History@Pharmacy: Teaching a historical perspective using a digital resource" in Pharm Hist 2012; 54(4): 112-114.
Derek Jennings, assistant professor (PI), and Michelle Johnson-Jennings, assistant professor (Co-PI), received a $50,000 award from the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for their project titled "Reducing Obesity in Tribal Communities: Identifying Needs Through Photovoice" for the period 9/1/13-9/1/15. Theirs was one of two projects funded in translational, community-based research in the areas of diabetes, pre-diabetes/metabolic syndrome or obesity prevention.
