The KUMD Story

KUMD’s story started in 1957 in the basement of Old Main’s Washburn Hall. Of course, the station has gone through tons of changes since then, from an illegal 100-watt AM station that was eventually closed down by the FCC, to a 250-watt FM station, to the current 100,000 watt stereo station with a 75-mile broadcast radius from Duluth. And now its new, slowly growing audience comes from all over the country and around the world, thanks to the Internet.

But one thing that hasn’t changed is the independent-alternative mission of the station which continues to guide the station’s programming.

So whether you are a member, or if you worked at the station in its Washburn Hall infancy, or in its middle years in Education (now Bohannon) 27, or in its current Humanities 130 location, please come help us celebrate on Saturday, May 5th!

KUMD’s 50th Anniversary

Anniversary Concert at the DECC
Shawn Colvin, Iris Dement and Pat Donohue will perform on Friday, May 4 at 7:30 pm at the DECC Auditorium in Duluth in honor of KUMD's Anniversary. All seats are $27. Anniversary Celebration at UMD
On May 5, KUMD will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting. Join past volunteers and members for a day’s worth of events including an open house at the KUMD studio and a live broadcast from the Marshall Performing Arts Center featuring Jim Hall, Hattie and the Black Frames, Azure du Jour, and the Randy Lee Quartet.
