TWEED MUSEUM NEWS
You won't want to miss the transition of the Tweed into a world filled
with works which utilize forms, concepts and systems of the plant world.
The Tweed Museum of Art is pleased to present the exhibition Botanica:
Contemporary Artists and the World of Plants. This exhibition officially
kicks off the celebration of Tweed's 50th Anniversary in the year 2000.
Botanica features artists who alternately use botany as a point of
departure, a primary subject, as an art material, and as a means of
discussing our difficult relationship with nature in a world overridden by
technology and industry. Botanica acknowledges the universal nature of its
theme, and the fact that art of high quality is produced in regional areas
as well as in urban centers. The exhibition will have great appeal to
lovers of art and plants, as well as those involved in environmental
causes, science educators and all ages of students. The exhibition runs
through October 12.
An artist lecture by Francis Yeatts Whitehead will be held at 6:30
p.m. on Tuesday, September 23.
"Botanica Family Day: Art and Science," will include hands-on
activities, demonstrations, music, food and fun for the whole family from
1 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. For more information call Peter
Spooner at 726
7056.
An artist lecture by Jean Humke will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, October 5.
An artist lecture by Todd Bockley will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on
Tuesday, October 12.
For more information regarding the exhibitions and events mentioned
above, call Mary at the Tweed Museum of Art at 726-7823.

owners and employees. Governor Jesse Ventura is invited as keynote

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS
Lisa Bartel, KUMD, wrote "He Rescued Me," a true story, for an on-line service called "Heartwarmers" last November. This summer, the national magazine Woman's World wrote an article about the story for their August 17th edition of the magazine. Recently Bartel's story is being considered as a finalist for a new book, The Best of the Heartwarmers.
Sabra Anderson, dean, College of Science and Engineering, has been named the Minnesota State Coordinator for ACE/NET, the American Council on Education's national women's leadership program.
Gloria DeFilipps Brush, professor and head, Department of Art, showed
three digital photographs in the SIGGRAPH 99 Gallery: TechnOasis
exhibition in Los Angeles in August. SIGGRAPH is the International
Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques. Eleven
prints
by Brush were acquired recently for the permanent collection of the
Akron
Art Museum in Ohio.
Mary Cameron, Department of Human Resources, will be taking an
educational leave this year to attend an Executive Program in Human
Resource Management at Syracuse University.
In April, at a special ceremony at Moscow State University, Ron Caple,
professor, Department of Chemistry, received a Diploma and Medal
as Honorary Doktor Causa of Moscow State University from Rektor V.A.
Sadovnichii. The ceremony was attended by forty chemists from Moscow State
and the Russian Academy of Sciences and also by the Science Attache
Officer of the American Embassy.
This prestigious award was given to Caple for his successful efforts
over the past 25 years in promoting research contracts and exchanges
between Moscow and U.S. universities. Caple's acceptance speech was given
in Russian.
Arlene Lodahl, UMD Stores, has nine abstract works displayed on paper at Jitters Coffee and Tea House in Duluth through the end of October.
Ron Marchese, professor, Department of Sociology and Anthropology,
will be conducting archaeological research with the Austrian Institute
of
Classical Archaeology for the next three years at the ancient site of
Plataea, Greece. The site dates to at least the third millennium B.C.,
but
is important as the location for the final phase of the Persian invasion
of Greece where, in 479 B.C. the remnant of the Persian army under the
command of Mardonius, cousin to the Persian king Xerxes, was defeated by
the combine Greek army under Cleomenes, king of Sparta.
Marchese also has received the blessing of the Armenian Patriarch,
Mesrob III to continue his evaluation of the sacred textiles of the
Armenian churches of Istanbul. Many of the churches were badly damaged in
the recent earthquake that devastated western Turkey on August 17.
Marchese has also recently been asked by Oxford University Press to
evaluate a substantial monograph entitled "Roman Ideas: Their Origin,
Nature, and Function."

for thirty Minnesota Conservation Corps (MCC) watercraft inspectors, at
MnDNR-Headquarters in St. Paul this
June. As the only program of its kind nationally, MCC staff will station
themselves at water accesses across Minnesota each season to inform
boaters about proper actions they should take to prevent the spread of
aquatic exotic plants and animals, like zebra mussels and Eurasian
watermilfoil, and inform them about state laws that prohibit transport on
public roads.
Jensen gave an invited presentation on "Ballast Water Mediated
Introductions of Aquatic Nuisance Species" at the Transportation Research
Board's Summer Ports, Waterways and International Trade Conference, at the
DECC, in July. The Transportation Research Board is a unit of the National
Research Council, a private, nonprofit institution that is the principal
