TWEED MUSEUM NEWS
The exhibition Botanica: Contemporary Artists and the World of Plants officially kicks off the celebration of Tweed's 50th Anniversary in the year 2000. It runs through October 12.
An artist lecture by Francis Yeatts Whitehead will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 23.
"Botanica Family Day: Art and Science," will include hands-on activities, demonstrations, music, food and fun for the whole family from 1 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 25. For more information call Peter Spooner at 726 7056.

NORTHLAND @ WORK
Northland Business @ Work is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on September 14 at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. This regional event is presented by the UMD Center for Economic Development, the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, and the Duluth News Tribune, with primary sponsorship by the Iron Range Resources Rehabilitation Board and Iron Range Economic Alliance. A career fair and a business forum will bring job seekers and small business owners/employers together to learn about the impact of technology and workforce issues on small business owners and employees. Governor Jesse Ventura is invited as keynote luncheon speaker and Alan Hald, founder of MicroAge and Chairman of Image, Inc., is also a keynote speaker.
The Business Forum will feature five session tracks including "eCommerce Applications in Small Business," "Emerging Technologies, Investing in Technology Based Businesses," "Workforce Development in the Northland," and "Where The Jobs Are." The Career Expo will also feature two session tracks on Job Skills for Job Seekers and various workforce issues, including often overlooked sources of employees and temporary firms. ALWORTH INTERNATIONAL
BROWN BAG SERIES
This popular series features UMD's faculty, staff, students, and Duluth community members sharing their international experiences. Presentations are free and are held at noon on Thursdays. For more information call 726 8229 or e-mail ints@d.umn.edu.
"The Former Yugoslavia: Conflicts and Contrasts" with Eli Miletich, former police officer and Chief of Police in Duluth will be presented on September 16 in the Kirby Bullpub. Miletich served with the UN's National Police Task Force in Mostar, Bosnia during 1998. His Bosnian Croation background and ability to speak the language helped him in the training of police and reporting of human rights violations.
"From Khomeini to Khatami: An American Woman in the Islamic Republic of Iran" with Martha Alworth, citizen diplomat from Duluth, will be presented on September 23 in the Kirby Bullpub. Alworth traveled to Iran for three weeks in June to look at the art and architecture of ancient Persia and modern Iran and to observe the daily life and customs of people under Islamic rule.
"Russia: Prospects and Dilemmas" with Alexis Pogorelskin, Associate Professor and Head of the Dept. of History, will be presented on September 30 in Kirby Ballroom A. Pogorelskin will bring us up to date on the volatile situation in Russia where economic catastrophe and erratic leadership could spell disaster. Pogorelskin, a Russian historian and scholar who has made numerous trips to Russia, will assess Russia's prospects for the future.

WOMEN'S CLUB EVENT
The UMD Women's Club invites families and guests to the annual Welcome Event. This year they are having a "Pig & Turkey Roast" beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 17 at the second Pavilion at the end of Park Point. LEO KOTTKE
KUMD Radio announces the presentation of Master Guitarist Leo Kottke in concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 in the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Kottke has been hailed as one of the best six and 12 string guitarists in the world, as evidenced by his induction into the Guitar Player Magazine Hall of Fame and his consistent placement on Guitar Player's Annual Readers Poll, voted Best Acoustic Guitarist numerous times. Reserved-seat tickets are on sale now at all TicketMaster locations, and the Electric Fetus in Duluth. HISPANIC/LATINO/CHICANA
FALL 1999 CELEBRATION
These events are free and open to the public. They are sponsored by Hispanic/Latino/Chicana Learning Resource Center and the Latino/Chicana Student Organization. For more information contact Susana Pelayo Woodward at 726-8444.
The film: The Changing Role of Hispanic Women will be shown at noon on September 20 in Kirby 355-57. In this film several prominent Latina women, including author Isabel Allende, discuss their changing role within the context of family values, male machismo, and the traditional role of females as the center of the family and community life.
The visual artist, Yolanda Lopez will give the celebration keynote speech, "An Artist View: Looking at Pictures, Myth, and Media," at 7 p.m. on September 28 in Kirby Ballroom. Yolanda Lopez is best known for her seminal piece The Portrait of the Artist as the Virgin of Guadalupe, an investigation of the Virgin of Guadalupe as a powerful female icon. Classically trained as a painter, her work in the last ten years has expanded into installation, video and slide presentations. Her video When You Think of Mexico: Images of Mexico in the Media has toured internationally and is collected in university libraries nationally. All of Lopez's work reflects her on-going inquiry into the importance of visual images as modes of portrayal, access to information, and the development of consciousness and consensus.
A Latin American Craft Sale will be held from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on September 27-29 in the Kirby Hallway.
The film: Hispanic Education at the Crossroads will be shown at noon on October 4 in Kirby 355-57. This program, hosted by actor, James Olmos, examines how Hispanic/Latino/ Chicano children are faring in the educational system, with an emphasis on bilingual education.
The film: Ties that Bind: Immigration Stories will be presented at noon on October 11 in Kirby 355-57. This program looks at the human drama behind the current debate over U.S. immigration policy. It roams both sides of the Texas-Mexico border, exploring the root causes of why Mexicans immigrate. The role played by transnational corporations and their social and economic impact on both Mexicans and other North Americans is considered.
The exhibition and display "Dia de Los Muertos/Day of the Death" will be presented from October 27-November 3 in the Tweed Museum of Art. The Day of the Dead is a tradition which dates back to the Aztec civilization. The Aztecs believe that the soul of the dead returns home to the world of the living.
The film: The Double Life of Ernesto Gomez Gomez will be shown at noon on November 8 in Kirby 355-57. This moving, magical, yet informative documentary follows 15-year old Ernesto during the year he leaves his adopted family in Mexico to come live in the USA and get to know his birth mother, Dylcia Pagan. She is a Puerto Rican patriot serving 55 years in a U.S. prison for trying to gain Puerto Rico's independence from the U.S. It is a journey of self-discovery for both mother and son, a story of adoption, immigration, colonialism, racism, and love, set on the history of Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S.

FALL OUTDOOR PROGRAMS

A Hawk Ridge Tour will be held from noon - 3 p.m. on September 21. Duluth's own Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve draws people from all over the world to observe the fall migration of hawks. Explore this unique site and learn how to identify hawks as well as discover other interesting natural wonders at this site. Meet in the Sports & Health Center Lobby
Adaptive Night Climbing on the Wall will be held from 6 - 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 23. People of all abilities enjoy rock climbing. Whether they speak sign language or use a wheelchair, this is a great night to try climbing on UMD's Indoor Climbing Wall. Instructors from Vertical Pursuits and staff from Courage Duluth will demonstrate adapted equipment and communication techniques to fit different abilities and experience levels. ASL interpreter provided. No experience is needed. Meet at the Indoor Climbing Center located in the Sports & Health Center on the lower level of the ice rink directly across from the observation windows.
A North Shore Climbing Weekend will be held from September 24 - 26. Tucked back into the hills above Lake Superior is a wild and scenic lake fringed by many excellent cliffs, Johnson Lake. It is a climbing area noted for its deep-woods beauty and seclusion. They will divide a weekend of climbing at Mystical Mountain and the other rocks in this area with two nights of relaxation and camping combined with classic North Shore rock climbing.
IN MEMORY
A tribute to Dr. Dorab N. Baria, professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, and his lifelong dedication to education will be held at 2 p.m., on Saturday, October 9 in the Marshall Performing Arts Center. A reception will follow the tribute.

STATE ARTS BOARD FUNDS TWEED MUSEUM
The Tweed Museum of Art received a $25,600 grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board to help support Tweed's 50th Anniversary Exhibition and Museum Education program season in the year 2000.

GRIGGS CENTER ELECTION
An election is currently in process for three expired positions on the Griggs Center Board of Directors. Ballots are being mailed to faculty and staff who had charge accounts at Griggs Center last year. If you did not receive a ballot and would like one, please contact Barb Teske at 726-8288 or email bteske@d. umn.edu. Please return ballots no later than Wednesday, September 22.

SPEECH-LANGUAGE-HEARING
UMD's Robert F. Pierce Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic is now scheduling appointments for the Fall Semester. They provide a variety of services including evaluation, treatment, and counseling for persons with speech, language, or hearing disorders. BETTER U
Incorporated in the UMD Life Fitness Program for Fall Semester are a number of Better "U" fitness classes designed to provide beginning participants an opportunity to learn the basics of exercise in a user friendly environment. Offered with the beginner in mind, these classes are designed to educate and motivate -- no experience required! Regardless of age, gender, or fitness level, participants can begin TODAY to improve health, reduce stress, look better, feel better, have fun, and be a BETTER "U"! STUDENT WEB CONTEST 2000
Once again, UMD is sponsoring a Student Web contest. The project is to develop a Web site for an undergraduate course and/or Web-based materials for an undergraduate course.
Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Each student must have an identified faculty or departmental sponsor. You can submit more than one entry but only one winning entry per student will be awarded. The project is to develop a Web site for an undergraduate course and/or Web-based materials for an undergraduate course. Five $500 awards will be given.
The deadline for submission of the completed Course Web Site is January 28, 2000. Winners will be notified by February 18, 2000. Notify spihlaja@d.umn.edu as soon as possible, but no later than December 1, 1999, if you intend to participate in this Web Contest. SWEDISH EXCHANGE
Ten Swedish students have arrived for fall semester through exchanges with three universities in Sweden. They are Johanna Dahl and David Pettersson from Karlskrona-Ronneby University; Anna Davidsson, Peder Eriksson, Mattias Nilsson, and Christian Sallstrom from Vaxjo University; and Maria Eklund, Katarina Josefsson, Cecilia Haggkvist and Martin Pettersson from Umea University. They are studying a variety of subject areas, including computer science, communication, business, engineering and English. Six UMD students are studying in Sweden this fall through exchanges. They are Kristen Bye, Beth Holbrook and Brent Christenson studying business courses at Vaxjo University; Brian Engman and Steve Schneider studying computer science at Karlskrona-Ronneby University; and Barbara Herring studying biology at Umea University.

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Alison Aune, instructor, Department of Art, has her floral icons and portrait paintings on display with her sister, Kirsten Aune, and Portuguese friend, Francisco da Costa Maya in the exhibition "How the Sea Got Its Colors," at the Duluth Art Institute in the Balcony Gallery of the Depot. The exhibition closes September 19. Guests to the exhibition can call the Art Institute at 733-7560 for free visitor passes.

Gloria DeFilipps Brush, professor and head, Department of Art, has work in the major exhibition Innovation/Imagination: 50 Years of Polarois Photography which opened initially at the Ansel Adams Center in San Francisco and now begins a national and international tour. The exhibition includes such other artists as Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, and Chuck Close. Brush's work also appears in the book associated with the show, published by Harry N. Abrams in New York.

Paul Damberg, director of development, KUMD-FM, was awarded the PRADO pioneer award at the 1999 Public Radio Development and Marketing Conference in Portland, Oregon. The award, one of the top three national awards given in public radio development, is presented to an individual for their contribution and encouragement of others in the field.

Jim Klueg, professor, Department of Art, currently has his ceramic vase, "Viva", included in the Alexandria Museum of Art's September Exhibition in Alexandria Louisiana. The national show's juror was Beth Handler, assistant curator for the Department of Painting and Drawing at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City.

Associate professors in the Department of Education, Elizabeth Quintero and Mary Kay Rummel, have a book accepted for publication by Peter Lang Publishers. The book, Educational Foundations: Exemplary Teachers as Guides for the New Millennium, will be in the Counterpoints Series, Studies in the Postmodern Theory of Education, edited by Joe L. Kincheloe & Shirley Steinberg.

LeAne Rutherford, assistant professor, Instructional Development Service, presented a session titled "Myth, Market, and Metamorphosis: Career Change" at the National Conference of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) in Minneapolis, in June. Based on that session, she wrote an article, "Taking Charge of Your Professional Life: A Special Librarian's Guide to Job Satisfaction" which was published in the September, 1999, issue of Information Outlook. The article will soon be available on the Web for members of SLA.

NRRI Staff News

Gerald Niemi, CWE, has been named a U.S. representative to the Lake Superior Binational Forum. This organization, which advises U.S. and Canadian governments about critical issues relating to Lake Superior, consists of 24 members from business, environmental groups, industry and academe. Forum members are also responsible for developing strategies for eliminating pollutants and contributing toward the foundation of a healthy economy.

Carol Johnston, CWE, was named Chair-Elect of the Wetland Soils Division of the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). The primary goal of the Wetland Soils Division is to provide a common forum whereby wetland soil scientists can discuss major research issues and future directions, communicate effectively with other professional societies on the role of soil science in wetlands, provide a common base for publication of wetland related research and provide national and international leadership in this area. Johnston's term will begin in November.

John Pastor, CWE, has recently been recognized as an honorary member of the Finnish Society of Forest Science. The society was founded in 1909 to promote research in forest and wood science. With its network of more than 500 Finnish and international members, the society strives to enhance links between researchers and practical foresters while promoting public interest in forestry research.
