TWEED MUSEUM NEWS
"Works on Paper Series: Prints from Tandem Press" will run until January
9, 2000. "Highlights from the Collection: Works on Paper" will also run
until January 9.
There will be an Artist Lecture by Michael Tonder at noon on
Wednesday, December 8. Tonder works in kiln-formed glass, using a variety
of recycled glasses.

GLENSHEEN NEWS
Glensheen, the historic Congdon estate, will offer guided tours from 11
a.m. -
2 p.m., Fridays through Sundays.
See Glensheen in its holiday splendor as the "Christmas at Glensheen:
Old Fashioned Christmas," display opens November 26. Get your holiday
cards hand cancelled with Glensheen's special 20th anniversary
cancellation design at the U.S. Post Office Hand Cancellation Event, from
11 a.m. - 1 p.m., on November 27.
Holiday Brunches at Glensheen with a tour, gourmet meal and
entertainment by area musicians will be held on December: 4, 5, 7, 9, 11,
12, 14, 16, 18, and 19. The self-guided tour starts at 9:30 a.m.

FOOD DRIVE
The UMD Statesman will sponsor a Food Drive Monday, November 29 through
Tuesday, December 14 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at a table in front of the
Statesman office in Kirby Student Center. Any non-perishable food items
you can donate will be greatly appreciated. All donations will be given to
the Salvation Army for distribution.
GEOLOGY SEMINARS
The Department of Geological Sciences presents seminars for fall semester.
All seminars will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursdays in 185 Life Science.
On Thursday, December 2 Kent Syverson, Department of Geology,
University of Wisconsin Eau Claire presents "The Glacial Geology of
Western Wisconsin."
On Thursday, December 9 Eric Dott, Barr Engineering Company,
Minneapolis, Minnesota presents "Geologic Controls on Contaminant
Migration and Exposure Risks at a Former Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Site
and a Former Steel Mill Site."
MUSIC EVENTS
The music department will present Violeta Petrova, pianist, as part of
their Concerts in Tweed Series, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 2 in
the Tweed Museum of Art. Performing an all Brahms concert, Violeta Petrova
offers romantic piano music. A native Bulgarian, Petrova now lives in
Helsinki, Finland, although her busy concert schedule takes her all over
Scandinavia, Europe, Japan and the United States.
This may be the last chance of this millennium to dance to this
century's greatest big band sounds. Dance, listen or reminisce as UMD's
Jazz Ensemble I and II play the big band sounds of Count Basie, Duke
Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and Glen Miller. The Big Band
Extravaganza will feature UMD faculty members Ramon Vasquez on trumpet and
Tina Thielen Gaffey, vocalist. This event takes place at 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, December 7 in the Marshall Performing Arts Center.
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 5 the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band
will perform in Marshall Performing Arts Center.
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 9 the Percussion Ensemble and Vocal
Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Marshall Performing Arts Center.
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 12 Sounds of the Season: University
Singers, Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers and instrumental ensembles will
perform in the Marshall Performing Arts Center.

THEATRE DEPARTMENT
"Guess who's talking?" It isn't a baby; it's a dog and she talks!
From a dog's perspective, romp through friendship, marriage, denial and
acceptance and answer the age old question, "Why can't I lay on the sofa?"
The comedy, Sylvia will be performed at 8 p.m. on December 2-5 and

BIOLOGY SEMINARS
Biology seminars are held at 3:30 p.m in 185 Life Science.
On Friday, December 3 John Krenz, assistant professor, Biology
Department, Minnesota State University, Mankato, will lead the seminar on
"Sexual Strategies in the Dimorphic Mole Salamander, Ambystoma
talpoideum."
On Friday, December 10 Jean Mengelkoch, biology department graduate
student will lead the seminar on the "Diet of the Tree Swallow
(Tachycineta bicolor) as Related to Insect Diversity and Abundance."
TOYS FOR TOTS
The UMD Athletic Department will again be raising money to purchase toys
for needy youth in the Duluth area. Last year over $1500 was raised in
this program. Donations will be accepted at home athletic events in the
near future. A booth will also be set up in Kirby on December 7 and
December 8. Another way to to assist this program is to simply send your
donation to the UMD Athletic Department. Anyone donating will have an
opportunity to win some fantastic prizes!
FALL OUTDOOR PROGRAMS
A Full Moon Hike will take place from 8 - 10 p.m. on Tuesday,
December 7 where you can celebrate the last full moon of the millennium.
Discover symbolic traditions of the full moon and learn natural night
history in Duluth's old growth forest on Minnesota Point. Beautiful
skylines, mysterious forests and hot cocoa await all. Meet in the Sports &

SIGMA XI EVENTS
James K. Huber will present "Archaeological Implications of Pollen
Evidence for Wild Rice (Zizania aquatica) during the Paleoindian, Archaic,
and Woodland Periods in Northeast Minnesota" at 7:30 p.m., December 8, in
130 School of Medicine. A social hour will follow the presentation.

AD CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
WINNERS
Eight UMD students received Lake Superior Ad Club Scholarships in
November. Public service campaigns for the Bethany Crisis Nursery were the
basis for the competition. Jennifer Bahl, Communication Major, received
the second place award and $250. Kurt Melby, Graphic Design Major,
received a third place award and $150. Andrea Grublesky, Graphic Design
Major, received a third place award and $150. Heather Mead, Int'l
Studies/Spanish and Chip Rogers, Communication Major received a third
place team award and $150. Mark Thomson, Graphic Design Major, received a
fourth place award and $100. Naomi Byers, Graphic Design Major, received a
fifth place award and $75. Leah Helgenset, Graphic Design Major, received
a fifth place award and $75. The first place winner was a St. Scholastica
student.
MORRIS K. UDALL
SCHOLARSHIPS
University of Minnesota Duluth students in fields related to the
environment, and Native American and Alaska Native students in fields
related to health care or tribal policy, are invited to apply for the
$5,000 Morris K. Udall scholarship.
The Foundation awards scholarships to college juniors or seniors.
Students must be nominated by their institution. The deadline for receipt
of all 2000 nominations is February 15, 2000. Please note: UMD deadline
for applications to the committee is at 4:30 p.m. on January 21, 2000, in
209 Bohannon Hall.
The scholarship is offered to students from a broad range of
disciplines. Majors have included environmental engineering, agriculture,
biology, cultural studies, history, public policy, and
pre-law. Likewise, Native American and Alaskan Native scholars have come
from such backgrounds as American Indian studies, philosophy, political
science, sociology, tribal policy, economic development, government,
health care, health services, and health policy.

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS
Gloria DeFilipps Brush, professor and head, Department of Art, has
been
appointed to the nominating and career development grants review committee
for the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council for 1999-2000.
She is one of eleven artists represented in Digital Hybrids, an
exhibition of work by individuals working at the forefront of digital art
processes, at the McDonough Museum of Art at Youngstown State University.
The exhibition, which runs from November 5 - December 23, coincides with
the opening of the Beecher Center for Arts and Technology, a joint project
of YSU and the Butler Institute of American Art.
Douglas Dunham, associate professor, Department of Computer Science,
published a paper, "Transformation of Hyperbolic Escher Patterns" in
Volume 1, No. 1 of Visual Mathematics, the electronic journal of ISIS
Symmetry, the International Symmetry Society. It may be viewed at

Dean Lettenstrom poses such scholarly and historical questions such as, "Did Leonardo Fish?" in a suite of paintings now showing at Lizzard's Gallery in Duluth. His work is presented as Artist of The Month for November.
Haike Friedrichsdorf was interviewed by KDLH Channel 3 in November about the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, and the changes it brought about. It was broadcast on the news on November 9.
Arlene Lodahl, UMD Stores, had a short fiction entitled "In The Forest Of Ardor" published in the September issue of Minnesota Crossroads: Newspaper of the Streets, operated by Open Sky Press, Inc., St Paul.
Rachael Martin has been appointed to the position of education and
volunteer coordinator at Glensheen Historic Estate. Martin will be
responsible for the development and presentation of educational programs
as well as volunteer recruitment, training and scheduling. She has served
as the executive director of the Douglas County Historical Society in
Superior and managed operations at Fairlawn. In addition, Martin was
formerly the curator of interpretive services at the A.M. Chisholm Museum
and served as the registrar for the St. Louis County Historical Society.
She has focused on our regional culture and earned her MA from the
University of Minnesota by conducting oral histories from Finnish
immigrants and their descendants in northern Minnesota. She authored
Northern Minnesota Women: Myths and Realities and teaches a course on the
history of northern Minnesota women through all University of Minnesota
campuses.
Howard Mooers and Penelope Morton, associate professors in the Geology
Department, Phillip Larson, Ph.D. candidate and Dan Allison,
undergraduate, attended the Geological Society of America's annual meeting
in Denver, Colorado in late October.
Dan Allison presented a poster in the hydrogeology session entitled:
"Use
of a Hemispherical Chamber for Measurement of Evapotranspiration in a
Boreal Forest Wetland Ecosystem." Howard Mooers, adjunct professor Carol
Johnston, Professor John Pastor, and Terry Brown, post doctoral associate
with NRRI were co-authors.
Phil Larson gave a paper in the Precambrian Geology session
entitled:
"Proterozoic Mafic Dikes, Western Mesabi Range, Minnesota." Former grad
student Jeffrey S. Price was co-author.

Subhash Basak recently gave an invited presentation on "Development of
Hierarchical QSAR Models for Predicting Toxicity of Chemicals:
Statistical and Neural Net Approaches," at the Air Force Predictive
Toxicology
Conference, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.
John Kingston published the following paper: "Taxonomy, Ultrastructure, and Distribution of Some Gomphonemoid Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae: Gomphonemataceae) from Rivers in the United States," coauthored by J.P. Kociolek. in the Canadian Journal of Botany 77: 686-705, 1999.
