TWEED MUSEUM EVENTS
"All System Go," an exhibition from nearly fifty art and design
faculty from the University of Minnesota campuses in Duluth, Morris and
Minneapolis
St. Paul, will be on display from through December 21.
The Tweed Museum is also featuring the exhibit "Fifty Years/Fifty
Artworks," through December 21. This exhibition features fifty works
representing the museum's multi-faceted collection.
A Day With(out) Art Exhibition, World AIDS Day 2000: "No One Has Been
Cured. Make A Difference," will be on display from November 28 - December
10 in the Tweed Museum of Art. Artists working in any medium are invited
to participate. Artwork is due by 4 p.m. on November 22, in the Tweed.
The exhibition, "post-hypnotic," is coming January 9. Curated by
Barry Blinderman, this exhibition examines the resurgence of optical
effects in the work of twenty-eight painters from the United States,
Europe and Japan.

GLENSHEEN NEWS
Glensheen is offering tours this winter each Friday, Saturday and Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Holiday decorating at the historic Congdon estate continues through
November. Weekend tours offer glimpses into the annual holiday
preparations.
Additionally, holiday brunch reservations are now being accepted for
the following dates: December 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 17. Some
dates are filling rapidly. The Glensheen Holiday Brunch program includes a
brunch and tour of the festively decorated mansion. Prepaid reservations
are required for this event, and can be made by calling the Glensheen
office.

STATESMAN FOOD DRIVE
The UMD Statesman will be sponsoring a Food Drive from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
running from Monday, November 27 through Wednesday, December 13. Please
drop off donations at the table in front of the Statesman office in Kirby
Student Center. Donated food will be given to the Salvation Army for
distribution.
OUTDOOR PROGRAM EVENTS A Project Wild Workshop will be held from 6
p.m. - 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28. Learn how to use and understand the
Project Wild collection of activities that focus on wildlife. Lessons are
hands-on, easy to use, and fun. This is one of the most useful resources
for incorporating environmental, wildlife related topics into lessons and
programs. Meet in 119 SpHC.
A Paper Making Class will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29.
Come and learn the history of this simple but revolutionary invention and
make some of your own paper from recycled materials. Meet in 9 SpHC.
There will be a Canoeing and Canyon Hiking Trip to the San Juan River
in Utah from March 9 - March 18. Over 80 miles of river between Sand
Island and Lake Powell provide access to spectacular canyons, Anasazi
Indian ruins, petroglyphs, and the beauty of the desert country in spring.
The itinerary allows time for hiking, exploration of geology, flora,
fauna, and historical points of interest. The river has class I-II rapids
with long stretches of flat moving water.

BUSINESS LUNCHEON FORUM
"Signs and Implications of Under- employment in Northeast Minnesota," will
be presented at the next Business Luncheon Forum. The presentation will
begin at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 28, at the UMD Center for
Economic Development in the Duluth Technology Village. Find out the
implications for Northeastern Minnesota coming from a new study by the
University of Minnesota School of Business and Economics. Presenters are
Kjell Knudsen, Dean of UMD School of Business and Economics and Richard
Lichty, professor of economics at UMD School of Business and Economics.

FALL SCHEDULE
The Geological Sciences Seminars will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays in
175 LSci at UMD.
Jeffrey Mauk, University of Auckland, New Zealand, will speak on
"Geology of the White Pine Sediment-Hosted Stratiform Copper Deposit,
Michigan," on November 30.
John Swenson, Department of Geological Sciences, will speak on
December 7 regarding "Sedimentary Basins and Dynamical Systems:
Implications for Interpreting the Stratigraphic Record."
UMD THEATRE
The UMD Theatre will be performing The Vacant Lot November 30 -December 3

and Immunology will speak on "Mycobacterium Marinum as a Model for

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
TOY FUNDRAISER
The UMD Athletic Department will again be raising money to purchase toys
for needy youth in the Duluth area. Last year over $1500 was raised in
this program by UMD athletic staff and athletes. Donations will be
accepted at UMD home athletic events following Thanksgiving. A booth will
also be set up on December 12, 13 and 14 in Kirby. Another way to assist
this program is to send or bring a donation to the UMD
Athletic Department prior to December 15. Anyone donating will have an
opportunity to win fantastic prizes.
SIGMA XI SPEAKER
Subhash Basak, NRRI, will speak on Tuesday, December 5, regarding
"Chemistry in Silico: An Integrated Approach to Drug Discovery and Hazard
Assessment of Chemicals."
UMD PRESENTS
CHANCELLOR'S AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH
George "Rip" Rapp, Regents' Professor of Geoarchaeology and Director of
the UMD Archaeometry Laboratory has
been named winner of the Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Research.
Rapp was selected for the distinction by the UMD Research Seminar
Initiative Committee from nominations received from the entire campus.
Rapp is a distinguished scholar in the field of geoarchaeology, a
field which he helped to create. He came to UMD in 1975, and his primary
area of research for the past 32 years has been in geoarchaeology.

Jory Peterson will be attending the 9th Annual Family Reunion,

and Seniors Across Generations," on November 20, in Nashville. She will
take part as a panel member in the "Opportunities for Life-long Learning,
Teaching and Meaningful Work" roundtable. Conference sponsors are
University of Minnesota's Children, Youth and Family Consortium and
Vanderbilt University's Child and Family Policy Center.

eBooks are electronic versions of printed books, presenting a versatile
new way for both on and off campus users to access book information 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. UMD Library's access to the netLibrary
database provides access to over 1,700 proprietary titles and over 3,000
public domain titles across many subject areas.

GRANTS SUPPORT
WOMEN'S ISSUES
The Commission on Women announces that applications for grants are
currently being accepted. Applications are available from: Nancy Damberg,
Business Office, 209 DAdB, 726-6966. The grant information and
applications are also available on the web at:

Small grants are for amounts up to $300 and must be submitted at
least one month before the date of the event. Small grant applications are
accepted at any time throughout the year. Major grants are $301-$1,000 and
must be submitted according to the following deadlines: April 15 for
funding requests for programs to be held fall semester and
November 15 for funding requests for programs to be held spring
semester.
AIDS DAY ART EXHIBIT
A Day With(out) Art Exhibition World AIDS Day 2000: "No One Has Been
Cured. Make a Difference," will be on display from November 28 - December
10 in the Tweed Museum of Art. The intent of the exhibit is to reignite
focus on the AIDS epidemic and rising numbers of young people infected in
the United States today.
All artists working in any medium are eligible to participate. Works
must be 12" by 12", finished size, not to exceed 12" in any direction, and
ready to hang or install. If there are any special hanging considerations,
please call Peter Spooner at 726-7056 in the Tweed Museum of Art. Artwork
is due in the Tweed by November 22, at 4 p.m. Artwork must indicate value
for insurance purposes and if artist wishes, (s)he may donate work for
silent auction whereby monies will be donated to local AIDS organizations
for prevention. (Artwork may be donated for silent auction, sold and/or
displayed).Works, which are not sold or auctioned off, must be picked up
from the Tweed Museum of Art no later than Monday, December 15.

FLU SHOTS
Flu shots will be available on campus on November 29 and 30. Times and
location will be announced soon. Due to a nationwide shortage of vaccine,
UMD Health Services has had to postpone the flu shot clinic dates. Rest
assured that it is still effective to get vaccine in late November as
outbreaks in Minnesota usually occur later in December. Prices this year
will be $8 for students and $10 for all others.
NEWS FROM UMD STORES
All UMD Stores will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday from November
23 - 26.
Campus Books
The everyday Book Buyback will end on Monday, November 27. Mary Minor
Evans will sign her book, A Twentieth Century Lady, the story of Katharine
Sinclair Minor, from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29. There will
be a color film enlargement special from Monday, November 27 through
Saturday, December 2. Some exclusions apply. Champ will be in Campus Books
from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6 to take free holiday
photos with students, staff and faculty.

The UMD Bulldog Shop will be open from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Tuesday,
November 21. The Annual Bulldog Shop Holiday Sale will be from 8:30 a.m. -

Helen L. Carlson, professor of early childhood studies, presented "Reflection Frameworks and Technology Tools: Early Childhood Student Teaching" at the National Association for the Education of Young Children Conference (Professional Development Component) in Atlanta, Georgia this November.
James H. Fetzer, McKnight University professor of philosophy, is
co-chair
of "November in Dallas", a national convention devoted to the
assassination
of JFK, which will be held this November, in Dallas. He will moderate
and participate in sessions on the current state of research and on
illusion and denial about the death of JFK involving some of the most
distinguished scholars working on the case today, including Noel Twyman,
David W. Mantik and Peter Dale Scott.
Kathy Heltzer, Department of Social Work, recently presented at the
St.
Louis County Human Services Conference. The theme of the 2000 conference
was "Reflection, Renewal, and Rejuvenation." Her presentation was
primarily for social workers and foster parents entitled, "What's So Funny
About Behavior Management,
A Social Worker/Foster Parent Perspective."
Ron Marchese, Department of Sociology/Anthropology, recently met with His Beautitude Mesrob II, Armenian Patriarch of all Turkey, on their combined work on the textiles of the church collections in Istanbul. Marchese is currently on leave in order to finish a multi-volume publication on the art of the Armenian church collections. He most recently appeared in the Armenian newspapers which highlighted this valuable research. He presented a joint paper in German on this research which has been supported by the Patriarchate in Istanbul. Work is being conducted as a joint project with scholars in the United States and Europe. The work has great significance in understanding late Byzantine art work and textiles.
Susan Mulholland, associate director, and Stephen Mulholland, research
assistant, of the Archaeometry Laboratory co-chaired a symposium at the
joint Midwest Archaeological and Plains Anthropological Conference held in
St. Paul this November. The symposium, "Northern Minnesota: From Forest to
Grassland," featured the archaeological research conducted in recent
years. UMD presenters included Susan Mulholland, "Different Land Use
Patterns at the Fish Lake Dam Site," Stephen Mulholland, "A Legacy in
Stone: The Paleoindian and Archaic of Northeastern Minnesota and The
Neubauer Site: Archaic Habitation and Copper Working in Pine County,"
Robert Donahue, research assistant, "A Scenario for Soil Development at
the Fish Lake Dam Site", and Mary Pulford, assistant scientist, "Becoming
Mortuary Copper in Northeastern Minnesota."
George "Rip" Rapp was presented the third Chancellor's Award for
Distinguished Research. Currently the
director of the Archaeometry Laboratory here at UMD, Rapp has held a
variety of academic and administrative positions in his career, first in
the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering in the South Dakota
School of Mines and Technology (1957-65) and in the Department of Geology
and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota (1965-74) before his arrival
at UMD in1975. Rapp was selected for this distinction by the Research
Seminar Initiative Committee, which reviewed nine nominations from
departments across the campus. Selection was based upon the quantity and
quality of his research and the general interest of his proposal for a
seminar presentation to the University community.
NRRI NEWS
Subhash C. Basak presented an invited lecture entitled "Mathematical
Structural Invariants: Tools for Drug Design and Predictive Toxicology" at
the international symposium on "Strategies and Perspectives in Drug
Development, Design and Molecular Modeling" organized by the Indian
Institute of Chemical Biology, Calcutta, India, in October. Basak was also
a member of the National Advisory Committee of the conference.
Gerry Sjerven was invited to attend the NASA-RACNE Northeast Regional
Applications Workshop recently. The workshop participants included
representatives from 14 states, representing
state, local, and tribal governments. The goal of the workshop was to
learn about and help NASA design its new initiative to help SLT
governments apply remote sensing technologies to practical problems and
needs.
Water-on-the-Web has won the 2000 Technical Excellence Award for
public education and research, from the North American Lake Management
Society, in recognition of extending effective and creative education in
lake restoration, protection, and management. Rich Axler was in Miami to
receive the award.
SEA GRANT NEWS
Cindy Hagley, environmental quality educator, gave presentations about
exotic species to twenty-five 6-12 graders at the "Kids Plus Conference,"
at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center in October.
Douglas Jensen, Exotic Species Information Center coordinator, gave an
invited presentation "Lake Superior's Least Wanted: The Aquatic Invasion
is Getting Worse," to 25 students, professors, and the public at the
Sigurd Olson
Institute, Ashland, WI, in October.
Jensen also gave an update on a Sea Grant-sponsored initiative related
to the
potential spread of aquatic nuisance species via live bait at a Ruffe
Control
Committee meeting in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, in October.
Barb Liukkonen, water resources educator, conducted a teacher workshop in Dakota County in October to help teachers initiate lake monitoring projects with their students. She taught basic limnology concepts, physical monitoring and presented Water on the Web project, Lake Access, and the shoreland management Web site.
