TWEED MUSEUM EVENTS
"All System Go," an exhibition from nearly fifty art and design faculty
from the University of Minnesota campuses in Duluth, Morris and
Minneapolis-St. Paul, will be on display through December 21.
The Tweed Museum is also featuring the exhibit "Fifty Years/Fifty
Artworks," through December 21. This exhibition features fifty works
representing the museum's multi-faceted collection.
A Day With(out) Art Exhibition, World AIDS Day 2000: "No One Has Been
Cured. Make A Difference," will be on display through December 10.
The exhibition, "post-hypnotic," is coming January 9. Curated by
Barry Blinderman, this exhibition examines the resurgence of optical
effects in the work of twenty-eight painters from the United States,
Europe and Japan.

GLENSHEEN NEWS
Glensheen is offering tours this winter each Friday, Saturday and Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weekend tours offer glimpses into the annual
holiday preparations.
Additionally, holiday brunch reservations are now being accepted for
the following dates: December 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 17. Some dates are
filling rapidly. The Glensheen Holiday Brunch program includes a brunch
and tour of the festively decorated mansion.

STATESMAN FOOD DRIVE
The UMD Statesman will be sponsoring a Food Drive from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
running through Wednesday, December 13. Please drop off donations at the
table in front of the Statesman office in Kirby Student Center. Donated
food will be given to the Salvation Army.
OUTDOOR PROGRAM EVENTS
There will be an Intro To Aid Climbing Workshop from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. on
Thursday, December 7. Session one is a basic introduction to this modified
form of moving up the rock. Learn how aid climbing works and what kinds of
equipment are needed for your first aid route. During the second session
try it for yourself. Meet at the Indoor Climbing Center.
There will be a Canoeing and Canyon Hiking Trip to the San Juan River
in Utah from March 9 - 18. Over 80 miles of river between Sand Island and
Lake Powell provide access to spectacular canyons, Anasazi Indian ruins,
petroglyphs, and the beauty of the desert country in spring. The itinerary
allows time for hiking, exploration of geology, flora, fauna, and
historical points of interest. The river has class I-II rapids with long
stretches of flat moving water.

A Sounds of the Season concert will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday,
December 10, at Pilgrim Congregational Church.
There will be a Percussion and Vocal Jazz Ensemble Concert at 7:30
p.m. on Thursday, December 14, in the Marshall Performing Arts Center.
GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES
FALL SCHEDULE
The Geological Sciences Seminars will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays in
175 LSci at UMD.
John Swenson, Department of Geological Sciences, will speak on
December 7 regarding "Sedimentary Basins and Dynamical Systems:
Implications for Interpreting the Stratigraphic Record."
UMD THEATRE
The UMD Theatre will be performing The Vacant Lot at 8 p.m. December 5 - 9
in the Marshall Performing Arts Center. The UMD Theatre production of The
Vacant Lot is the world premiere of a new, original work by UMD Theatre
alumna Jeannine Coulombe, and is being directed by another UMD theatre
alumna, Julie Unulock, returning as a guest artist. Tickets are available
at the UMD Box Office and ticket reservations can be made by calling

James Karr, professor, University of Minnesota, will speak on
"Protecting Ecological Health: The 21st Century Challenge," on December
8.
Brendan Keogh, a biology graduate student, will speak on December 15.
John Lehman, professor, Biology Department, University of Michigan,
will speak on January 26.
NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
Everyone is welcome to attend the UMD Recreational Sports New Years Eve
Party, "Let's Have A Ball," from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 31.
Activities include ice skating, swimming, inline skating, rock climbing,
basketball, volleyball, face painting and family films. Concessions are

NEWS FROM CONTINUING EDUCATION
University for Seniors will sponsor a presentation about the Great
Lakes
Aquarium at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, in Kirby Ballroom C.
The
45-minute lecture will be followed by a question time. All are invited.
FIRST READING XXI
There will be a conference on research-in-progress, "First Reading XXI,"
at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 27 at UMD and Glensheen. This is the twenty
first annual conference at UMD on any aspects of social history, current
popular culture, culture of the Americas and relevant comparative
studies.

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT
TOY FUNDRAISER
The UMD Athletic Department will again be raising money to purchase toys
for needy youth in the Duluth area. Last year over $1500 was raised in
this program by UMD athletic staff and athletes. Donations will be
accepted at UMD home athletic events following Thanksgiving. A booth will
also be set up on December 12,13 and 14 in
Kirby. Another way to assist this program is to send or bring a donation
to the Athletic Department prior to December 15.
MORRIS K. UDALL
FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
UMD students in fields relating to the environment, and Native American
and Alaska Native students in fields related to health care or tribal
public policy, are invited to apply for Morris K. Udall $5000
Scholarships. Because environmental issues can be approached in a
multi-disciplinary way, the scholarship is offered to students from a
broad range of disciplines. Majors include: environmental engineering,
agriculture, biology and other natural sciences, natural resource
management, political science, sociology, anthropology, geography,
cultural studies, history, public policy, and pre-law.
To be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their
institution. The UMD Institutional deadline for receipt of completed
applications is 4:30 p.m. on February 1. The scholarships, which are to be
used for the 2001-2002 academic year, will be awarded in April.

CHANCELLOR'S AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH
George "Rip" Rapp, Regents' Professor of Geoarchaeology and Director of
the UMD Archaeometry Laboratory has
been named winner of the Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Research.
Rapp was selected for the distinction by the UMD Research Seminar
Initiative Committee from nominations received from the entire campus.
Rapp is a distinguished scholar in the field of geoarchaeology, a
field which he helped to create. He came to UMD in 1975, and his primary
area of research for the past 32 years has been in geoarchaeology.

GRANTS SUPPORT
WOMEN'S ISSUES
The Commission on Women announces that applications for grants are
currently being accepted. Applications are available from: Nancy Damberg,
Business Office, 209 DAdB, 726-6966. The grant information and
applications are also available on the web at:

Small grants are for amounts up to $300 and must be submitted at
least one month before the date of the event. Small grant applications are
accepted at any time throughout the year. Major grants are $301-$1,000 and
must be submitted according to the following deadlines: April 15 for
funding requests for programs to be held fall semester and
November 15 for funding requests for programs to be held spring
semester.
CONTINUING ED NEWS
UMD Continuing Education has announced expansion of its "UMD College in
the Schools Program". The program, begun in 1989, has expanded into 12
area high schools, with a total of 40 freshman-level college courses. The
40 courses are taught in participating high schools by high school
teachers, and are coordinated by UMD faculty members. UMD Continuing
Education further announces that it is a founding member in the newly
formed National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollemnt Partnerships (NACEP).

Faculty and Staff News
James H. Fetzer, McKnight University professor of philosophy, has edited Science, Explanation, and Rationality: Aspects of The Philosophy of Carl G. Hempel, for Oxford University Press. This volume presents new studies of Hempel's work by distinguished philosophers of science and complements his earlier edited volume of studies by Hempel, who was one of the most influential philosophers of science of the 20th century.
Dale Krageschmidt, assistant professor, Department of Industrial
Engineering, Master of Industrial Safety Program, was an invited guest
participant of U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental
Security, Sherri Goodman to the Department of Defense Environmental
Cleanup Stakeholders Forum in St. Louis, in November. The purpose of the
forum was to evaluate the current status of the Defense Environmental
Restoration Program and to plan the direction of the program for the
future. Krageschmidt, a nationally recognized expert in hazardous waste
site remediation design and management, currently co-chairs the
Restoration Advisory Board for environmental cleanup at the former Duluth
Air Force Base site. He has designed and managed remediation projects for
numerous Defense Environmental Restoaration Program and Environmental
Protection Agency Superfund sites over the past 20 years.
Jon Pierce, professor, Organization and Management in the UMD School
of
Business and Economics was one of 33 people named a charter member to the
Academy of Management's Hall of Fame. Pierce was honored for his
contibutions to the academy's research journal. His area of expertise is
job design to increase employee satisfaction and productivity.
Alexis Pogorelskin was recently an invited participant in the
international "Lessons and Legacy Conference." The conference, which meets
every two years, is devoted to presentation of the latest scholarship in
Holocaust Studies. She has also been invited to present her latest
research on Karelian fever by the journal Siirtolaisuus, published by the
Institute for Migration Studies at the University of Turku. She will
present a paper on her Karelian fever research to the FinnForum conference
on Finnish studies. The conference will meet in Jyvaskyla, Finland in
June.
Kim Roufs has been named director of the UMD Advisement Coordination
Center, Roufs has been instrumental in the success of the center over the
past two years and will continue to provide campus-wide advisement and
retention initiatives.
Mary Kay Rummel, associate professor in the Department of Education has poetry appearing in a recent issue of Waterstone, and her biography and work is included in a just released anthology, 33 Minnesota Poets, from Nodin Press. Her book of peotry, Green Journey, Red Bird, is being published by Loonfeather Press in Bemidji and will be out in January. She has a work of literary ethnography in the October issue of Journal of Qualitative Studies on Education.
Neil Storch, Department of History, was selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, 2000. Who's Who publishes biographies of 2.5% of U.S. college faculty.
Janelle L. Wilson, assistant professor, Department of Sociology/Anthropology, had her article, "Women in Country Music Videos," published in ETC: A Review of General Semantic, volume 57, number 3, Fall 200. Also, her entry on "Socialization" (co-authored by Subhash Sonnad at Western Michigan University) was published in The Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology and Behavioral Science, third edition, volume 4, edited by W. Edward Craighead and Charles B. Nemeroff.
Archaeometry Lab News
The year 2000 issue of The Minnesota Archaelologist was a joint
publication by the Minnesota Archaeological Society and the UMD
Archaeometry Laboratory. The issue, focusing on research in northern
Minnesota, was compiled and edited by Susan Mulholland, associate
director, and George (Rip) Rapp, director, of the Archaeometry Laboratory.
The twelve articles range from special topics to site reports to general
syntheses of the region and illustrate the interdisciplinary approach to
archaeology emphasized by the Interdisciplinary Archaeological Studies
program (IAS). Contributions by present and past UMD graduate students
include: "Initial Review of Northeastern Minnesota Reservoir Copper," Mary
Pulford; (IAS), "Source Characterizations of Lithics from the Western Lake
Superior Region," Shiela Lindenberg, Geology, with Rapp, "Overview of the

Debra Neubauer Site," Stephen Mulholland with A.D. Romano). A book review
of Susan Martin's Wonderful Power by Mathew Thomas (anthroposlogy
