GLENSHEEN NEWS
Glensheen is offering tours this winter each Friday, Saturday and Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Weekend tours offer glimpses into the annual
holiday preparations.
Celebrate the impending New Year in style with Fine Dining at
Glensheen
Historic Estate. Choose the early seating at 4:15 p.m. or the late seating
at 6:45 p.m., and enjoy a personal tour of the historic Congdon mansion
prior to a multi-course gourmet dinner in Glensheen's dining room. Each
seating is limited to 20 people and at $50 per person, these dinners fill

OUTDOOR PROGRAM EVENTS
A Canoeing and Canyon Hiking Trip on the San Juan River in Utah will be
held from March 9 - 18. Over 80 miles of river between Sand Island and
Lake Powell provide access to spectacular canyons, Anasazi Indian ruins,
petroglyphs, and the beauty of the desert country in spring. The itinerary
allows time for hiking, exploration of geology, flora, fauna, and
historical points of interest. The river has class I-II rapids with long
stretches of flat moving water.

NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
Everyone is welcome to attend the UMD Recreational Sports New Years Eve
Party, "Let's Have A Ball," from
4 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 31. Activities include ice skating,
swimming, inline skating, rock climbing, basketball, volleyball, face
painting and family films. Concessions are available.

CONTINUING ED NEWS
University for Seniors will sponsor a presentation about the Great
Lakes Aquarium at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, in Kirby Ballroom C.
The
45-minute lecture will be followed by a question time. All are
invited.
University for Seniors presents "Making Theater Out of History" at
1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, in Kirby Ballroom C. Tom Isbell,
associate professor of Theater at UMD, will be the speaker. All are
invited.

SCUBA COURSE
There will be two Introduction to Scuba courses offered through the
Recreational Sports Department. The class meets three Saturday evenings
from 5 - 9 p.m. on January 27, February 3 & 10 and February 17, 24
and March 3. Those interested in an Advanced Scuba course may come the
first night for the itinerary. The cost for the course is $190 for
faculty, staff and students and $215 for others. There will also be two
free "Try Scuba" classes on January 26 and February 16 from 7:30 - 9 p.m.

FIRST READING XXI
There will be a conference on research-in-progress, "First Reading XXI,"
beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday, April 27 at UMD and Glensheen. This is the
twenty-first annual conference at UMD on any aspects of social history,
current popular culture, culture of the Americas and relevant comparative
studies.

FACULTY CAMPAIGN
The faculty and staff campaign runs through January 31. All gifts from
faculty and staff count in this campaign.
Last year faculty and staff contributed a total of $163,000. For an
example of the talented students your gifts help, look for Michelle and
Bev Kiheri on the campaign poster. Check your campus mail for the campaign
letter complete with pledge cards, funds list, and payroll deduction form.

TECHFEST 2001 CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The TechFest 2001 committee seeks proposals for booth demonstrations to be
presented at the upcoming TechFest scheduled for March 23, 2001. This
annual event is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the myriad ways
technology is being used on our campus to enhance or change the way we
learn, teach and share information. All students, staff, and faculty are
eligible and are strongly encouraged to participate. The deadline for
proposals is February 27, 2001.

PROFESSIONAL STAFF
COUNCIL SPRING 2001
UMD's Professional Staff Council (PSC) holds open meetings on a monthly
basis. PSC, comprised of 12 elected representatives serving two-year
terms, facilitates productive discussions of issues confronting UMD's
professional staff, hosts two forums each academic year, and cosponsors
Staff Appreciation
Day. PSC serves as liaison for professional staff to the Campus Assembly
and the Student Association, promotes the interests of higher education
and
research, advances the interests, stature, and welfare of professional
staff, and serves as an advisory body to UMD administration. All
professional staff are welcome to attend PSC meetings, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.,
on the following dates: January 12, February 9, March 9, April 6, May 4,
and June 1. To submit an agenda item, reserve a chair at an upcoming

MORRIS K. UDALL
FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
UMD students in fields relating to the environment, and Native American
and Alaska Native students in fields related to health care or tribal
public policy, are invited to apply for Morris K. Udall $5000
Scholarships. Because environmental issues can be approached in a
multi-disciplinary way, the scholarship is offered to students from a
broad range of disciplines. Majors include: environmental engineering,
agriculture, biology and other natural sciences, natural resource
management, political science, sociology, anthropology, geography,
cultural studies, history, public policy, and pre-law.
To be considered, students must be nominated by their institution.
The UMD Institutional deadline for receipt of completed applications is
4:30 p.m. on February 1. The scholarships, which are to be used for the
2001-2002 academic year, will be awarded in April. Contact Rick J. Smith

All UMD Stores will be closed December 23, 25, 29, January 1 and 2 for the
holidays. Campus Books, Marketplace and Bulldog Shop will be open from 10
a.m. - 2 p.m. from December 26 - 28. The Computer Corner will be closed.

The cash for books buyback will be from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. on December 19 and

20. The drawing will be held on December 21. Take $1 off all 4 and 5 subject notebooks from January 16 -
19.

Faculty and Staff News
Ajit Das, professor of psychology, has contributed an article on
compulsive gambling for the Encyclopedia of Psychology, recently published
by the American Psychological Association and Oxford University Press. He
was invited by APA to write this article for the Encyclopedia.
Paul Kiprof, assistant professor, Department of Chemistry, published an article titled "Reluctant formation of a titanium(IV) arene complex" with graduate students Brett C. Steurer and Duane D. Fansler and with undergraduate student Mark A. Erickson in Issue 5 of Mendeleev Communications.
Jim Klueg, professor of art, recently exhibited four vases in an invitational exhibition entitled "Making a Mark: Experimental Drawing and Printmaking", held at Central Michigan University, in November. The exhibition was curated by CMU art faculty member Julia Morrisroe. Klueg currently has work in "Materials Hard and Soft" at the Denton Arts Center, Denton, Texas. The national craft media exhibition was juried by Harlan Butt, past-president of the American Enamellist Society.
Mary Jean Menzel has been promoted to Assistant Continuing Education
Specialist. Menzel serves as the program coordinator of the CEHSP master
of education partnership cohorts and the educational computing and
technology certificates. In May, Menzel received the prestigious
University of Minnesota Certificate of Achievement for exemplary service
to the University of Minnesota.
Jackie Moran, oral history coordinator, and Neil Storch, professor, Department of History, conducted a videotape interview with Jackson R. Huntley, professor emeritus, Department of Communication, in November. This interview, part of an ongoing project to preserve the history of UMD, was made possible by the financial assistance of Regents' professor George "Ripp" Rapp. Technical assistance was provided by Ken Moran.
NRRI NEWS
Subhash Basak and David Opitz, University of Montana, published the
following paper:"Hazard Assessment
Modeling: An Evolutionary Ensemble Approach,"in Genetic and Evolutionary
Computation, 2: 1643-1651, 1999. Milan Randic, Drake University and Ames
Laboratory, Denise Mills and Basak, published the paper entitled, "On
Characterization of Physical
Properties of Amino Acids" in the International Journal of Quantum
Chemistry, volume 80, pp. 1199-1209, 2000. Water on the Web was featured
in the November 10 issue of Science. The article appeared in the Education
section of their NetWatch feature, and includes a graphic of the Remote
Underwater Sampling Station.
SEA GRANT NEWS
The Water on the Web project (http://wow.nrri.umn.edu) received the
technical excellence award from the North American Lake Management Society
at their annual meeting in Miami, Florida, in November. The award
recognized the project's efforts in "extending effective and creative
education in lake restoration, protection,
and management."
Doug Jensen, Exotic Species Information Center coordinator, co
chaired a session, Aquatic Exotics in the Mississippi River Basin, at the
62nd Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference, in December in Minneapolis.
Jensen gave a presentation to 70 attendees in the session, "Effective
Tools for Public
Education Aimed to Prevent the Spread of Aquatic Nuisance Species."
Jeff Gunderson, associate director, gave an invited presentation,
"The HACCP Approach to Prevent the Spread of Aquatic Nuisance Species by
Aquaculture and Baitfish Operations" to 70 attendees at the Environmental
Strategies for Aquaculture Symposium, held in conjunction with the 62nd
Midwest Fish and Wildlife Conference. This year's conference hosted over
1,500 managers, researchers, policy makers, aquaculturists, and
educators.
