Endowing the Future
Because they are permanent, endowments are the financial cornerstones
of any university. Earnings from investing the endowment provide
both security and independence–it is available year after
year, regardless of changes in other income sources.
Donors of all types – alumni and friends, University faculty
and staff, corporations, and foundations, make endowment gifts.
People make endowments by themselves or with others; classmates,
family members, friends, and business associates. All have one thing
in common – they care about UMD and how it enriches lives.
Many donors choose to work with the University to create a new
endowment fund to address a need not covered by current endowments.
The size of the gift will vary from endowment to endowment, depending
on the complexity and scope of the donor’s chosen purpose.
Endowments may be funded through current gifts, pledges, planned
giving or estate gifts.
Recommended amounts for common types of endowments are:
$10,000 quasi-endowed fund
$25,000 fully endowed fund (scholarships, graduate fellowships)
$100,000 to support an academic program
$500,000 minimum to support a professorship
$1,000,000 minimum to establish a new chair
Other donors direct their gifts to existing endowment funds, choosing
the fund that best reflects their interests.
