The Department of Biology is the hub for fundamental biological sciences at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Faculty and students in the Department of Biology form a collaborative network that conducts cutting-edge research which furthers our understanding of the natural world and finds application in fields from conservation to biomedical sciences.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences provides undergraduate and graduate students with the highest quality earth science education by incorporating a strong tradition of undergraduate geology and many opportunities for field-based study and independent research. The interdisciplinary nature of the geosciences combines science, engineering and math to create an understanding of our physical environment and the economic, political and ethical considerations that accompany environmental issues to equip our graduates with the skill sets needed to become leaders within their profession.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics responds to the ever-increasing demands for the mathematical sciences in today's society by providing an integrated set of academic and research programs designed to prepare students for careers in business, industry, education, and government. Faculty seek to develop critical thinking with broad exposure to many areas within the mathematical sciences.
The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering strives to deliver a laboratory-intensive undergraduate mechanical engineering education to provide students with the tools and skills to excel in the engineering profession, as they pursue lifelong learning and make positive contributions to society.

Aerospace Studies and AFROTC
Detachment 420 of the Air Force ROTC prepares young men and women for an air force commission as soon as they earn their degree. The department offers a curriculum focusing on Air Force history, leadership, management and professionalism partnered with the real world application of organizational leadership and management skills.
The Large Lakes Observatory is the only institute in the country dedicated to the study of large lakes throughout the world. LLO has a global outlook and an international reputation with field programs and collaborators on six continents. LLO provides unique research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.
The Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC) is a student workforce-driven geographic information systems (GIS) services organization with statewide visibility and relevance. GAC has a decade-long record of external contract work with state agencies, counties, and regional organizations. The Center's staff also provides assistance in classrooms and research projects across campus.
Research Instrumentation Laboratory (RIL)
The Research Instrumentation Laboratory (RIL) is a shared instrumentation facility that houses and maintains major analytical instruments such as scanning electron microscope for research and teaching. RIL also provides analytical services to local technology businesses. The entire UMD community benefits from the presence of RIL that helps advanced scientific learning and exploration.
